About this listen

Never before has a book like this one delved into the spiritual odyssey of cultural icon Bob Dylan. Tracking an American original - from his Jewish roots to his controversial embrace of Jesus to his enduring legacy as the composer of the Tempest album - Bob Dylan: A Spiritual Life delivers the story of a man in dogged pursuit of redemption.

Based on years of research and original interviews, this book sorts through the myths and misunderstandings and reveals Dylan to be both traditional and radical in the way he expresses his spiritual quest for purpose and meaning. "Call Dylan whatever you want, but the name won't stick", said foreword writer and film director Scott Derrickson. What does stick is his music, in part because his songs contain a deep, abiding spirituality that moves listeners more than the songs of any other artist.

Bob Dylan: A Spiritual Life bridges the gap between purpose and meaning in grand fashion. It offers listeners an informative, entertaining, and nuanced look into Bob Dylan's spiritual odyssey.

Touched by the hand of Bob

For the past 60 years, Bob Dylan has confounded and confused his critics and fans. There have been dozens of books written about Dylan over the years attempting to de-mystify the enigma and this Bob Dylan : Spiritual LIfe by Scott M Marshall, from 2017 is an update on the author's 2002 book Restless Pilgrim: The Spiritual Journey of Bob Dylan. A lot of work has gone into the facts quoted in this book such as the number of Dylan songs from the 1960's mention Jesus and the author goes to great lengths to analyse and dissect Dylan interviews and stage raps which are often vague and contradictory. It seems that Dylan's God is broad and wide and he seeks to bring truth and light into the lives of everyone quoting at various times from both the Old and New Testaments.
Despite his foray into Christianity in the late 1970's (Slow Train Coming, Saved and Shot of Love) Dylan comes over as a reluctant prophet more interested in playing music than preaching religion. Maybe song is, after all, the highest form of prayer.

Concise and insightful

Made me think about Bobs creative influence that goes into his songs and through them he hints at an awe and respect for humbling concepts. P.s Shot of love is a severely underrated album imo
