About this listen

Irina obsessively takes explicit photographs of the average-looking men she persuades to model for her, scouted from the streets of Newcastle. Placed on sabbatical from her dead-end bar job, she is offered an exhibition at a fashionable London gallery, promising to revive her career in the art world and offering an escape from her rut of drugs, alcohol and extreme cinema.

The news triggers a self-destructive tailspin, centred around Irina's relationship with her obsessive best friend and a shy young man from her local supermarket who has attracted her attention....

Boy Parts is the incendiary debut novel from Eliza Clark, a pitch-black comedy both shocking and hilarious, fearlessly exploring the taboo regions of sexuality and gender roles in the 21st century.

A Fascinating Book. Like Nothing Else.

Firstly the narration by the author is excellent. She conveys the brilliance of the character with a tone of voice matched perfectly to the detachment, boredom and psychopathic tendencies. A certain level of empathy, intelligence and awareness is needed to understand the story. it blends the brilliance of societies allowance of beauty being given a free ride no matter how they conduct themselves, with a character that is hyper aware of her beauty, whilst utilising it for her own twisted ends and hating herself for her perceived and actual ugliness. This really is a masterpiece and one I will think about and revisit.

I rate it

I’m rubbish at reading books because my attention span is so short, so I listen to them instead. It’s hard to keep me interested, but this one really kept me enthralled. Listened to it all in a couple of days. Brilliant.

Dark and excellently performed

The audio narrator, who is also the author did a phenomenal job of immersing me in the story and in Irena’s character. There were many times where I questioned what the reality of the book was and even when I finished it, I was not entirely sure what really happened. A very interesting portrayal of madness and obsessive behaviour.

Fascinating

4.25*

Wow. I really enjoyed this book?
It's a perspective that's entirely new to me yet I can't explain how it made me feel? I think that's part of the whole point but wow.
I love how there's all these differing themes woven together and this genre is definitely one I'm going to listen more to.
I loved being inside this woman's head, how taboo and disturbing it was.

It got a little confusing towards the end? I did binge listen to it though whislt moving and unpacking at my uni accommodation so there was a lot going on. I'd probably rated it a little higher if I followed the story all the way through.

Also, audio books narrated by their authors genuinely make the best kind of books.

I'd recommend if dark, domanatrix, obbesseion, artsy, taboo are your vibe!

Millennial Bateman

An already superb piece of work that’s elevated again in the author’s telling. Refreshingly modern dive into just how it feels to be both not there and everywhere all at once.

Captivating! Brilliant and Gritty!

Cannot rave about this book enough! Edgy without trying, gritty and vulgar but beautiful at the same time! Absolutely loved it! A real modern day psychological feminist story!

Brilliantly disturbing.

This book was brilliantly disturbing. Listening to this in 2023 some of the dialogue is a bit cringey but it is appropriate from the time (and maybe sometimes intentional), especially for being Eliza Clarks first book (I believe). Often made me wonder if the author has something wrong with her with the level of disturbing scenes the book had, but they are well written and performed and gave the book a great uniqueness. Being from Newcastle myself it had a special place in my heart which may have made me a bit bias. If you enjoyed this please check out Eliza’s new book Penance it is absolutely brilliant and captivating.
