About this listen

The collapse of modern societies has begun. That is the conclusion of two years of research by the interdisciplinary team behind Breaking Together.

How did it come to this? Because monetary systems caused us to harm each other and nature to such an extent it broke the foundations of our societies. So what should we do? This audiobook describes people allowing the full pain of our predicament to liberate them into living more courageously and creatively. They demonstrate we can be breaking together, not apart, in this era of collapse.

Jem Bendell argues that reclaiming our freedoms is essential to soften the fall and regenerate the natural world. Escaping the efforts of panicking elites, we can advance an ecolibertarian agenda for both politics and practical action in a broken world.

Heart felt truth

The most succinct and naked truth telling of the slow motion collapsing tragedy that is the human species. Well worth listening to....multiple times!

Comprehensive walkthrough of the collapse of modern society and tools to begin a new

Apart from the narrator, who read as from a phone register, I weirdly «enjoyed» this book. Warning: It is definitely not for anyone not already immersed in collapse theories and the state of our global eco system. But, it is incredibly detailed and thorough. Many times I found myself thinking «but What about..», only for Jem to answer it shortly after. I am ready to accept collapse now, I think.

Highly recommend. Content gives superb value

A vast amount of high quality research and experience has gone into this book, and it provides a rich well of food for thought for anyone wanting to know more and/or adapt to the obvious collapse of multiple systems of modern society we are currently going through.
Narration is superb, and the index is very good, allowing you to easily find areas of particular interest.

Wow

Be warned, due to the nature of this book, it is very heavy and will likely change a lot for you, but if you’re ready to explore the theme of collapse or what ‘sustainability’ should mean given today’s circumstances, this book is incredibly holistic and well researched. It ties together so many different areas of information in a way I have never seen done before and gives practical ways of dealing with our predicament

Arguably the most vital book written in this advanced stage of the Anthropocene

A must for anyone who cares about the world we are leaving behind for our children. Gut-punchingly real and meticulously researched

Truth

Brilliant, essential, inspiring & life-affirming! That's what the truth - so rare - can do. An extremely clearly argued explanation of our human predicament. A very high quality piece of agonising scholarship, from an author (and team of researchers) with very broad and highly relevant 'generalist' as well as specialist overview. Anyone who disagrees with the conclusions within this book needs to explain equally clearly why and how and show their workings. This is a wake up call sadly too late to prevent the collapse of societies and mass extinction of species (etc), but it does point to a positive way of being a human throughout what remains. Well narrated too. I thank the author and all involved from my heart.

Read / listen to this book

Honest and informative, this is a guide to our collective predicament and how we can meet it together. Neither sugar coated nor defeatist, but a dose of reality to reorganise around, for those who care about our environment and our future well being.

bleak but brilliant

This is one you need to stick with till the not so bitter end or it could be just overwhelming and a bit traumatic. There is so much in here both thought provoking and informative. Extremely well thought out and a good balance of pragmatism and philosophy as well as hard facts. If you have a grave sense of foreboding about the future, perhaps like me you'll continue to but you may also feel validated and somewhat reassured. I will leave it there and go cultivate my garden. Thanks Jem, this must have been much harder to write than read/listen to 🙏

Essential reading

Refreshing to read some real critical thinking, discussion of the different kinds of denial going on in some strands of environmentalism and well researched.
