About this listen
Dearra comes into possession of the magical Sword of Cyrus just as the evil Breken attack her island home. Though her people succeed in driving their enemy back to the sea, one of the invaders remains behind, left for dead by his cruel kin.
Now, Dearra doesn’t know what to be more surprised by, the fact that her sword can speak to her or that it has imperiously informed her that the handsome Breken warrior is her destiny.
The two are bound together by a chain of events that was set into motion 1,000 years earlier, and everything they thought they knew about themselves, their history, and their future is about to change.

Fantastic!
Any additional comments?
The book started of slow but persevere the story does get better and there are twist and turns that I was not expecting.
This has a bit of everything; action, romance, fantasy and a strong female character.
This is not a standalone since the main character hasn't saved her brother yet which means there is more to come.
Would highly recommend this book.

A fantastic, romantic, epic beginning....
First of all, I am chomping at the bit for the next book. This story is fantastic. It has a medieval feel, coupled with a bit of magic, tempered with a more egalitarian culture, drenched in romance, and topped with plenty of twists and turns to capture the readers attention.
Christine Grey starts the story slow as she builds the scene and sets the stage for all to come. Dearra is the daughter of the Lord of Maj but that is about all she has in common with a princess. She is a warrior and completely unaware of herself as a woman. When the Maj are attacked by their deadliest foe, Dearra finds herself in possession of a mysterious, magical sword. In the skirmish her beloved younger brother is taken and a Brekken warrior is left behind.
This marks the start of the Maj's efforts to save Phillip, Dearra's brother. Darius, the Brekken prisoner, bonds with Dearra and pledges his support to the efforts. Not all enemies invade from outside, and as life continues on the island of Maj, there are plenty of surprises, twists and turns to keep the reader committed to the story. The journey to retrieve Phillip doesn't happen yet but Christine Grey leaves the reader with suggestions of more to come.
J. Scott Bennett has done a good job narrating this book. He conveys the subtle nuances of the story perfectly.
