She has just buried her parents, a fire at their family home claiming both in a freak accident. Now she must leave Scotland, the only place she has ever known, and go to live with her uncle Louis and aunt Maude in their home in the Welsh woods.
As spring turns to summer, Phoebe falls slowly into the rhythm of life with her eccentric guardians in their curious home. But there is no one her age in the nearby village, and she is lonely until she meets a strange girl, Gwyneth, who wanders the surrounding forest barefoot and alone.
Outsiders both, the two girls form a strong bond, though nobody else seems to believe that Gwyneth is real. Phoebe knows better, and soon with her new friend's help, she begins to see the woods for what they truly are - a place of magic and wonder, where the line between life and death is blurred. Where spirits roam and secrets fester.
Something happened here, a lifetime ago. A wrong that yearns to be put right. The answer is within Phoebe's grasp, but will revealing it put her in grave danger?

Just beautiful!
I have listened to all of James Oswald's Tony McLean and Con Fairchild books and loved them but this is something quite different. This is a beautiful story of loss, love and friendship that embraces the author's love of nature and his past life in Wales. The narrator delivers this novel beautifully.

Feelings of sadness it had finished
A beautifully narrated book. It weaves the past and present in a way that tells the story so well with characters you want to hear more about - Broken Ghosts reveals it’s secrets gently- I truly enjoyed this

I thoroughly enjoyed this listen.
I loved this story. Well done Mr Oswald. I must confess to getting annoyed by authors who stray away from their original series keeping us waiting longer for the next book but this was very enjoyable. Just a wee bit of paranormal. A good balance between sadness, tension and a few hold your breath moments. Congratulations on finding the best female Scottish narrator. I LOVED IT!

Great stand-alone novel
Echoing themes of Welsh community and mythology in the Fairchild series, this is a great listen. Well narrated by Paula Masterton.

Darn good yarn
Was worried I wasn’t going to enjoy the book, as it was so different from the his other.
Great story, loved the characters, even the twins.
Would recommend it

A meditation on grief and place and belonging
The forest and the valley where most of this story is set are as important as the very compelling human characters. Oswald brings it all to life with aplomb. The world-building is remarkable. I felt as if I was walking alongside the main character the entire time rather than just having a story read to me; this is a tribute to the skills of the author and the narrator, both. Oswald subtly captures little snapshots of his characters moving through grief, abrupt change, and longing. There’s nothing trite or overdone here. He presents unique, interesting yet very relatable moments, and they build to a satisfying conclusion.

A clever tale twisting two periods together
The narration was outstanding for a story that demanded the reader’s understanding from the beginning. It is a detailed story with beautiful descriptions of places and people. Centred around Phoebe but with a cast of many more and much insight into the human condition. The beauty of the valley and the forest was counterpointed by the evil that eventually overtook Phoebe. Although there was a ghost, that spirit was completely believable.
Wonderful to have both Scottish and Welsh accents combined with (to my ear) perfect veracity. Congratulations on this production.

The atmosphere and
the lilting way of the narrator to tell this mesmerising and oddly meditative story is just perfect! I wish badly it wasn't a stand-alone novel. There's such beauty in the sorrow and as always J.D Oswald has done an amazing job of fleshing out the characters and making them all feel so, so real. I love that he couldn't fully stay away from sprinkling a bit of mystery into the story. The language use and the tempo of the text and the reader just sing together. A must-read!
