Summary

Gunder Jomann, a quiet, middle-aged man from a peaceful Norwegian community, thinks his life has been made complete when he returns from a trip to India a married man. But on the day his Indian bride is due to join him, he is called to the hospital to his sister's bedside. The local taxi driver sent instead to meet the bride at the airport returns without her. Then the town is shocked by the news of an Indian woman found bludgeoned to death in a nearby meadow.

Inspector Sejer and his colleague Skarre head the murder inquiry, cross-examining the townsfolk and planting seeds of suspicion in a community which has always believed it to be simple, safe and trusting. For what can only have been an unpremeditated and motiveless act of violence, everyone is guilty until proven innocent.

Disappointing

Storyline rather weak and disappointing with sudden ending. Would not recommend this. Its not up to her usual excellent standard.

Strange book

Many interesting characters, many suspects, I had to listen to the last 2 chapters again as the mediocre ending confused me. I prefer a perfect conclusion with not many loose ends.

Beautiful.

I am new to crime fiction. After the Larson books, which were fine, and a couple from Jo Nesbo I have found the three by Karin Fossum much more to my taste and this was the best yet.
There are a lot of well drawn characters in this novel, and the mystery got quietly but firmly under my skin. I finished it a week ago and am still remembering it. I don't agree with the other reviewer that there are loose ends. It is all there, and the light touch is very fine indeed.
Karin knows her characters well and nobody is all black or all white. I love her direct, unfussy writing, and the way the horrific event touches everyone.

Nearly a Wallander!

I am really enjoying the Karim Fossum Inspector Sejer books, and I would thoroughly recommend them for lovers of Nordic Noir. Mankell is the undisputed king in my opinion, but Karin Fossum is a close second. David Rintoul does a very good job as narrator - one tip, read them in order!

gripping

This was a well-written book and full of suspense. It is set in rural Norway so is quite different from Jo Nesbo. I would have liked all the loose ends tied up and felt that the book ended suddenly - I even checked my library! Still a very good book though

Well who did it?

If you could sum up Calling Out for You in three words, what would they be?

good tale unfinished

Would you recommend Calling Out for You to your friends? Why or why not?

Not really. The story was inconclusive. THe whole point of a crime story is to solve the crime but this didn't happen here.

Any additional comments?

I don't think the author told us who dunnit. Unless I missed a vital sentence (I listen while I'm machining) there was no proper conclusion to this story. THere were several threads not explained.
