Summary

Cartes Postales from Greece is an extraordinary new audiobook from Victoria Hislop, the Sunday Times number one best-selling author of The Island, The Return, The Thread and The Sunrise. It is fiction in full colour - magical and unique.

Week after week the postcards arrive, addressed to a name Ellie does not know, with no return address, each signed with an initial: A. With their bright skies, blue seas and alluring images of Greece, these cartes postales brighten her life. After six months, to her disappointment, they cease. But the montage she has created on the wall of her flat has cast a spell. She must see this country for herself.

On the morning Ellie leaves for Athens, a notebook arrives. Its pages tell the story of a man's odyssey through Greece. Moving, surprising and sometimes dark, A's tale unfolds with the discovery not only of a culture but also of a desire to live life to the full once more.

The Postcards

I love Victoria Hislop’s books, however, I was slightly disappointed in this one.

Postcards arrive, addressed to a name that Ellie doesn’t know, with no return address, each signed with an initial: A. They brighten her life. However, after six months, they stop.

Ellie decides that she must see the place for herself & as she leaves for Athens, a notebook arrives. She snatches it up & takes it with her.

The notebook tells of a young man’s, presumably A’s, journey through Greece.

Of course, one weak point in the book, in my opinion, the two meet.

It was better on a second listen!

Not my Fave

I love Victoria Hislop, but this book I struggled with, I tried the audio version and the book and couldn't get to grips with either.
Such a shame as I've loved all her other books. This one just wasn't for me.

Charming Vignettes ...

... but didn’t love this as much as I loved all of Victoria’s previous books. I think I would recommend it as an audiobook which is the format I have listened to it and it’s been great to ramble around with this in my ear… I did struggle to get into the paperback I have to admit.

What an amazing story!

I have never been to Greece, but this has made me want to visit more than ever! The amazing stories within the main story grab hold of you and drag you forwards in a way that you would never have expected. Some leave you feeling cold and edgy; others, warm and content. The combination of the whole book leaves you wanting more in a way that only a trip to Greece itself could satisfy!

An amazing book, beautifully read and brought to life.
Highly recommended!

Good

I thought the individual stories were interesting but the overall story was a little weaker.

A beautiful story.

This story was in fact a series of short stories, each good in their own way, with a rather nice background story tying them all together. Very enjoyable.
