About this listen

Cerphe's Up is an incisive musical memoir by Cerphe Colwell, a renowned rock radio broadcaster for more than 45 years in Washington, DC. Cerphe shares his life as a rock radio insider in rich detail. His story includes promotion and friendship with a young unknown Bruce Springsteen; his years at radio station WHFS 102.3 as it blossomed in a new freeform format; candid interviews with Little Feat's Lowell George, Tom Waits, Nils Lofgren, Stevie Nicks, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Steven Van Zandt, Robert Plant, Danny Kortchmar, Seldom Scene's John Duffey, and many others; hanging out with George Harrison, the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, John Entwistle, Jackson Browne, and many more; testifying on Capitol Hill with friend Frank Zappa during the "Porn Rock" hearings; and managing the radio syndication of both G. Gordon Liddy and Howard Stern. Player listings and selected performances at legendary DC music clubs Childe Harold and Cellar Door are also chronicled.

Cerphe's Up is both historically significant and a fun, revealing ride with some of the greatest rock-and-roll highfliers of the 20th century. Cerphe's Up belongs on the list of every rock fan, musician, and serious music scholar.

Cerphe

Not into rock music at all. But this guy had a load of good stories. And read like a typical radio guy. Well worth a listen

Not just for the deep enthusiasts

I thoroughly enjoyed this, despite thinking early on that it might be too Greg’s and specky for a Brit with some interest in a number of the characters. And yes, to me, the presentation sounded similar to an automaton crossed with a weather reporter crossed with ‘an eye in the sky’. But once my foreign ears tuned in to it I realised that this amazing man from an area of the States I hadn’t expected to be so deep in great music (although why on earth not!) has so much to share, it’s almost overwhelming. I don’t know anything about the US radio scene, it’s just a series after series of letters (and I’m spoilt by the BBC, especially 6 Music); however, I get it a little bit more now, and appreciate what this expert practitioner has delivered on behalf of all of us over such an extended period. A great story, well worth a read/listen. Thank you Mr Cerohe. Stuart
