THE DEBUT THRILLER IN THE BESTSELLING DAVID RAKER MISSING PERSONS SERIES, PERFECT FOR FANS OF MO HAYDER, LINWOOD BARCLAY AND MICHAEL CONNELLY
One year ago, Alex Towne's body was found.
One month ago, his mother saw him on the street.
One week ago, David Raker agreed to look for him.
Now he wishes he hadn't.
Mary Towne's son, Alex, went missing six years ago. Five years later he finally turned up - as a corpse in a car wreck. Missing persons investigator David Raker doesn't want the work: it's clearly a sad but hopeless case of mistaken identity brought to him by a woman unable to let go of her son. But haunted by a loss of his own, Raker reluctantly agrees.
Big mistake.
For as he digs deeper, he discovers that Alex's life was not the innocent one his mother believed. Buried in his past are secrets that were never meant to be found - and dark, dangerous men willing to kill to protect them.
Soon Raker will discover that there are things far worse than death . . .

Unusual but very well written book
Initially I found it a little difficult to get into this book, however perseverance was well worth it. The story twists and turns effectively and characters return unexpectedly throughout the book. The subject matter, evil alternative religion, is nasty and I really didn't see the final twist coming. Recommended

Good but glad I didn't start my Raker journey here
This is the first Raker novel, but bot the one I started with, and in all honesty I'm not sure I would have become hooked if I had started here. This story feels more 'horror' in parts than other novels on the series. it's a good story towards the end, but didn't hook me as other Tim Weaver/ Raker novels have.
I read You Were Gone first, followed by husband most recent Raker novels before going back to the start fot this. Honestly I would advise anyone to start with You Were Gone....the back story relating to Raker's wife is covered very quickly at the start of this book, so there isn't really a spoiler....and for my money it's the boom to get you hooked. On Audible it also has great narration. The narration on this one is really good as far as I am concerned.

Unputdownable.
Keeping the story in suspense till the end. The violence is not always believable, could do with less.

Fantastic Writer and Narrator!
I have already read all of the David Raker series and now reading them again. Joe Coen becomes David Raker and with clever writing from Tim Weaver, draws you in to the story and making you want more.
Thank you

Won’t be reading another
Bought as a later book in the series was on offer and caught my interest, but really disappointed.
Narration was good, but the plot was ridiculous, and not even a James bond exciting kind of ridiculous.
There are so many better stories out there.

Good first book of a series
Quite a unique take on a mystery. Raker is looking for missing people. His character is developed well. The story is great, and I enjoyed the twist at the end. The narrator was good. Looking forward to the next in the series.

A dull story
This story was drab and the narration monotone. The plot dragged on and was implausible at times. Cold blooded killers kill they don’t muck around so you escape again and again. I managed to get to the end for the twist and the rapid wrapping up but quite honestly I don’t know how I managed it.

Started off well...
I enjoyed the first two thirds of this book, but then the plot became ever more improbable and the dialogue totally unbelievable. If I hadn’t reached so far through the book, I would have returned it.
Fortunately I had already read the second book in the series, so I haven’t been totally put off.

Chasing The Dead
I seem to be listening to Tim Weaver's David Raker series in an odd order, for example I started with book #8. Anyway, this is the first and it ties in nicely with later events. I really loved listening to it and found it hugely compelling. I did have to skip some of the macabre torture scenes though.
The narrators were both brilliant and brought David Raker to life. Recommended.
