Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut Children of Blood and Bone.
They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.
Now we rise.
Zélie remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. When different clans ruled – Burners igniting flames, Tiders beckoning waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoning forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, anyone with powers was targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Only a few people remain with the power to use magic, and they must remain hidden.
Zélie is one such person. Now she has a chance to bring back magic to her people and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must learn to harness her powers and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where strange creatures prowl, and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to come to terms with the strength of her magic – and her growing feelings for an enemy.
The movie of Children of Blood and Bone is in development at Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions with the incredible Karen Rosenfelt and Wyck Godfrey (Twilight, Maze Runner, The Fault In Our Stars) producing it.
Critic reviews
"Turpin’s captivating narration, with incantations sung in Yoruba, intense battles, and lively, devastating dialogue, makes this an audiobook not to be missed." (AudioFile)

A wonderful read. The characters and story were well developed. And the suspense in the end is frustrating yet welcomed.

Exceptionally good read
I absolutely loved this book, listen via audible and purchased. My 15yr old is now reading and will not put it down. Great inspiration for young black readers and future writers. Gives a sense of identity, whilst dealing with topics of love, hate, police brutality, black loves matter and much more when translated in what's happening in today's society, however this does not take away from the feeling and imaginative fantasy throughout the story.

Interesting concept but not really for me thank you. Not my cup of tea as was more of an American concept.

Great Story
An amazing story. It was hard to listen to as a Yoruba man though because the narrator completely butchered the pronunciation of the Yoruba language. Why not get a Yoruba person to read the next book?

We are children of blood and bone!
I LOVE everything about this book. The story, characters, narrator... EVERYTHING.
I can see how this book has been inspired by current affairs, black history and African history.
I feel like I have just been on the most incredible journey of my life and I can't wait for the next one!

Wow!!!!
Nail biting and exciting. I loved the story overall, however the only issue I have was the narrator. As a Nigerian I was extremely disappointed no native speaking Yoruba person was asked to record those parts spoken in the native tongue.
The power of the words were lost as the narrator spoke then in a very unfamiliar and staccato way. This meant that parts of the book did not have the emphasis it was supposed to and threw me off.
Other than that, the book was managing.

Had the right mix of suspense and drama
I read The Childen of Blood and Bone after reading Black Leopard, Red Wolf and despite reading another weighty tome it didn't feel heavy at all.
I liked the fact the book focused on four distinct characters, and I did not feel lost at all with the changing scenes and characters.
The story read like the story of many displaced Africans who were made to learn the ways of another people, and the epilogue resonated with me greatly.
I'm so impressed that it is a debut novel.
Looking forward to the next few books.

My heart sang!
What a beautiful and gripping story! Complex and warm beautifully and unashamedly black characters, evocative descriptions and a story that doesn’t let go. My heart sang. I loved it!
