About this listen
The Barner family relocates to Cold Hollow, a quaint town nestled in a Vermont mountain range. They find it to be quite charming, and the inhabitants endearing, except for a few residents. Odd laws are enforced, confrontations begin, and insanity reigns as a madman sits upon his imaginary throne, trying to keep the threads of his dream from unraveling. Will Sophia and Angus Barner be able to protect their children from the malevolence that lurks within the small township? This is the story of a place you'll never want to visit.

Creepy and engaging at the same time
What did you like most about Cold Hollow?
The plot of this is creepy but very good. The setting is perfect but what makes it really stand out are the characters and the feeling you get that things are not at all what they seem. You know that something is coming but what will it be??
The characters were all very well written and developed.
Would you be willing to try another book from Emilie J. Howard? Why or why not?
Absolutely. The author did a very good job with this book. It really is very good. In fact stop reading this review and jump into the book!
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The ending was amazing. Saying that I was engaged and entertained throughout as it has great pace. Myrna steps up at the end, getting payback for all the years of abuse from Mizar. Even as she started planning and aligning her allies I wasn’t sure if she would be successful. The tension that has built in the last few chapters is brilliant! I was also satisfied with how things turned out. Does everyone get out alive? No spoilers read it! I will say however that wrongs have been righted as the book concludes.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I liked the homely potentially sweet little town feel that we get as the Barners arrive in Cold Hollow. At this point the focus of the book shifts to them. Sophia revels in opening her new bakery. She puts the kids (Liam and Leila) to work part time there and even then needs to hire another hand to keep things going. Myrna becomes an important part of the story as she forms a friendship with Sophia and tries to smooth the way for the Barners in the town. And all of this helps to lead to the tension that comes as things change as they settle into an odd town with odd rules.

Cold Hollow
Any additional comments?
I received this book for free in return for an honest review.
On one hand, I liked this book. The characterization was good, and the relationships between the characters were nice, if made slightly fast. I'm pretty sure Myrna decided she liked Sophia seconds after meeting her.
On the other hand, I found the pacing really strange. It's pretty slow going but at the same time I wanted to know what the secret behind the town was. You discover the plot twist roughly halfway through and I found it somewhat disappointing for the level of intrigue that had been built up.
Overall, it was a decent book that was somewhat disappointing.
