Con gli occhi chiusi venne scritto nel 1913 a Castagneto ed è un racconto di spunto autobiografico; nella figura di Pietro, tormentato e inquieto, viene rappresentato lo stesso scrittore; nel personaggio di Domenico, rude e avido, il padre di Federigo che veniva chiamato, alla trattoria che gestiva, Ghigio del Sasso; Ghisola è una ragazza di nome Isola che il giovane Federigo amò dal 1899 fino al 1903 e il podere di Poggio a' Meli è il Castagneto. L'opera può considerarsi il progenitore del romanzo esistenzialista, e, anche se all’inizio non ebbe un grande successo, nell'ultimo decennio del Novecento, con i saggi di Giacomo Debenedetti, Alberto Moravia, Carlo Cassola, Luigi Baldacci, è stato ampiamente rivalutato e la sua opera è stata collocata al vertice della letteratura del secolo. Cornice musicale: dalla quinta sinfonia di Gustav Mahler.
