About this listen

When private eye V.I. Warshawski is called out to a derelict drug house in a rural town just south of Chicago, she discovers something she wasn't expecting: the mutilated corpse of a man, dumped in a cornfield. It is a discovery that throws V.I. into the fascinating world of physics and invention: a design that sparked the construction of the computer as we know it, the development of nuclear weapons, the wonder of Newton's prisms and a train of dramatic events that occurred in wartime Vienna. Someone holds the answers to her questions - someone who will stop at nothing to prevent the truth from resurfacing.…

Not one of the best

Yet another story about Jews and nazis. It’s quite a good plot, but relies too much old history

V I Warchowski

What did you like best about this story?
Well written, nicely plotted, layered thriller

Any additional comments?
The narration was coherent and well done so I was happy enough. Only problem was it's quite a gritty thriller, but the narrator had the mature, warbling voice of a genial grandmother.

Slow

Takes a long time to get going, which is a shame because the plot is quite good. I found the ending rather unsatisfying but your milage may differ.

Narration was good.

Not as good as previous books

What did you like best about Critical Mass? What did you like least?

In this book I found the main character made great leaps of investigative direction with no foundation at all. It was like OK this has happened so I'm going to follow this line of enquiry. End of. No discussion, no thought process, just I'm going to do this and off I go. I found myself questioning where that line of enquiry came from as it seemed to be totally out of the blue. Simpler more reasonable lines of enquiry were not mentioned at all. Seeing as the whole book was based on this one line of enquiry I found it hard to follow as I just couldn't understand at all where she was coming from.

Would you be willing to try another book from Sara Paretsky? Why or why not?

Having read all Sara Paretsky's other books I was disappointed as I never felt the main character was going off on a tangent before - even when she did, I guess because before it was always explained where she was coming from. However this wouldn't put me off reading another book by this author as I found previous books enjoyable, and so the next one may be.

What about Liza Ross’s performance did you like?

I found Lisa Ross gave a clear performance that was very believable and would be happy to have her read for me again.

Not typical

I normally like the Warshawski books but this one and the previous one were too heavy on the past and the war. Although interesting, this aspect seemed to long and perhaps was because the author was carrying out some personal genealogy research. Not what I was expecting, and feel a bit duped.
