'It’s a testament to the cast of five that they manage to unite these apparently disparate elements. The effect as each story gives way to the next is one of history ebbing and flowing, of individuals united by place and past.' FINANCIAL TIMES
‘An epic the north has long deserved’ FINANCIAL TIMES
‘A sensational piece of storytelling … A singular and significant achievement’ GUARDIAN
‘Marvellous, artful, enchanted’ DAILY TELEGRAPH
'Cements Myers’s standing as one of our finest, and most deftly imaginative, writers' I NEWS
The triumphant new novel from the Walter Scott Prize-winning author of The Gallows Pole and The Offing
Cuddy is a bold and experimental retelling of the story of the hermit St. Cuthbert, unofficial patron saint of the North of England.
Incorporating poetry, prose, play, diary and real historical accounts to create a novel like no other, Cuddy straddles historical eras – from the first Christian-slaying Viking invaders of the holy island of Lindisfarne in the 8th century to a contemporary England defined by class and austerity.
Along the way we meet brewers and masons, archers and academics, monks and labourers, their visionary voices and stories echoing through their ancestors and down the ages.
And all the while at the centre sits Durham Cathedral and the lives of those who live and work around this place of pilgrimage – their dreams, desires, connections and communities.

Benjamin Myers at his best!
I initially struggled to get into the story (the constant credits/references were annoying), but once past this it was a wonderful story across several centuries with fantastic and passionate natation throughout!!

The most stars!
I just loved this book. The gentle characters and the insights into Cuddy and life in the 11th century and Durham today. Might not be for everyone. But definitely for me.

Story from different perspectives
Bit hard to follow at the beginning.Took me a while to get into the way it was written but then I was carried along as mesmerised as Cuddy's followers.

Great mixture of fact and fiction about St Cuthbert.
After a bit of a slow start I really found this fascinating- loved learning about Durham Cathedral and the tales about St Cuthbert. There’s so much poetry in Meyers’ writing that it made really good listening. Occasionally the accents were a bit dodgy in the two main narrators but it didn’t detract from the beauty of the story and the moving and at times spirituality of the characters’ stories.

Underwhelmed
Really wanted to like this, sadly couldn't get absorbed, found some of the narration unclear and jarring. I might go back and give it a second chance sometime.

This book made me want to be a Stonemason
Another tremendous book from Benjamin Myers who seems so effortlessly to transport me to another time, another place and perhaps, another plane. Beautifully narrated too.

Beautiful stories
Beautiful stories, beautifully told by North Eastern narrators, charting the story of the patron saint of North East England and his profound effect on the culture of our region.

Jarring OTT narration
An imaginative literary effort to bring immediacy, intimacy and enliven the deep affection St Cuthbert may have been regarded with in his lifetime.
The narration is drooly and sycophantic, to some extent this is demanded by the content.
