Summary

Timothy Mayfield has nearly given up on his search for a wife. Though he is the picture of a fine, social gentleman, Timothy wishes his finances provided a more stable foundation. Then his Uncle Elliott presents to him a solution: participate in his "marriage campaign," and upon approval of his choice for a wife, Timothy's inheritance will be his.

Freed from the constraints of having to marry for money, Timothy is ready to marry for love instead. And he knows exactly what he wants in a wife: youth, optimism, beauty, blonde hair, fine-boned features, shapely shoulders, small waist, blue eyes, button nose, solid fashion sense, a light laugh, low voice, arched eyebrows, fair skin, elegant fingers, quick wit, calm manner, and a dazzling smile.

His friend, Maryann Morrington, an heiress in her own right, tells him outright that his expectations are ridiculous - no such woman exists. Maryann had considered Timothy as a potential suitor for a time, but then their relationship shifted to friendship, and she has avoided allowing herself to have feelings for him again.

She agrees to help him find his "perfect wife," because she's certain that the search will render nothing. Until it does. Miss Shaw appears to fulfill every single item on Timothy's list - unlike Maryann who has brown hair, brown eyes, lacks delicate features, and possesses a laugh that is definitely unladylike.

But when Timothy and Miss Shaw begin courting, Timothy realizes something profound. He'd rather spend his time with Maryann. But can he trust his judgment when his heart has led him wrong so many times before?

It is only when Maryann leaves the London season early, that Timothy realizes that he had truly fallen in love with her and that his list of requirements were nothing but fantasy. If he hopes to build a strong relationship, Timothy must convince Maryann that she is the very woman he'd been looking for all along - before it is too late.

Dasling

Absolutely beautiful story. The characters are deep and touch on important topics, the setting details are transporting, and the plot is very refreshing.

I liked the way both of their flaws were pointed out & accepted, as well as having a 'plain' female protagonist.

Definitely recommend.
Thank you Audible, J.S. Kilpack & Justine Eyer for this beautiful production

Historical mistakes jar

This is once again a pleasant 19th century romance from Ms Kilpak but a little historical research would make it so much better.
Meals were not four courses soup, fish, meat, pudding in those days but many dishes on the table at once often sweet and savoury together in perhaps two courses. They didn't have sandwiches. A pub was not a thing at all. They would have met at an Inn. No one said "you and me both"! Such a pity as the characters are credible and the story while a little laboured was charming. One last point. I don't know what kind of daisies the author had in mind but British ones are very small and wilt on picking. They could not be arranged in a vase as they are too tiny. I suspect she means bigger cultivated daisy like flowers like Marguerites but you can't make a daisy chain with those. These thing spoil the veracity of the story for me.
Justine Eyre does a decent job of narration but I wish someone would tell her how to pronounce cravat!

Good story, poor research

It’s a nice enough story badly let down by poor research. For example the word ‘ego’ is a twentieth century term, and ‘nice’ had a very different meaning in Regency times. Pronunciation of place names is poor too.

A lovely entertaining story

Enjoyed this story so much more than the first one, the characters were nicer and the reader didn’t irritate as in the first story so thanks

Lovely story

I enjoyed this story a lot. Usually in these type of stories the heroines get hurt because of male pride, or extremely sexist behaviour and all is forgiven and forgotten with hardly any suffering for the male. This hero was constantly hurting the heroine, but he's such a good man that you keep forgiving and forgetting together with the heroine.

They were a lovely pair and the dialogues are witty and fun. She's very strong and intelligent. Her lack of confidence is nurtured by society but her strength built by her family and friends connection, as well as her belief that true value is unrelated to looks or money always pulls her through.

His insecurities however come from a complicated family but he's an extreme optimistic determinate to enjoy life to the best of his habilities in spite of his background or current situation.

Their goodness keeps you rooting for their happiness throughout the book.

A bit dull and very predictable

Admittedly I didn’t finish the book. Found it a bit dull and not very entertaining.

Pleasant story/H&h, a few irritating inaccuracies

The reading is well done and the plot, the hero and heroine are largely pleasing. There's a touch of role reversal, as often in these tales the heroines are the impractical and silly ones but in fact the hero is the one at first lacking practical sense and is even occasionally silly. It's refreshing that he's not a rake and that the heroine has a very resourceful maid servant to assist her is also a rather nice touch.
Sadly, there is a lot of inaccurate language, anachronistic in nature and the strict protocols, proprieties and social niceties of the day are not accurately portrayed. However, I have read far worse examples of such in other regency based books that I have also found less entertaining.

Great content

I really enjoyed the story line, but the person who read it I found quite annoying. I nearly stopped listening but wanted to know how the story ended.
