About this listen

At last, Heaven would find the happiness she longed for...free from the scorn and contempt of her past!

In her grandmother's fine, rich Boston house, Heaven Leigh Casteel dreamed of a wonderful new life of new friends, the best schools, beautiful clothes, and most important, love. The pearls of culture, wisdom, and breeding would now be hers. Soon, she would make the Casteel name respectable, find her brothers and sisters, and have a family again.

But even in the world of the wealthy, there were strange forebodings, secrets best forgotten. And as Heaven reached out for love, she was slowly ensnared in a sinister web of cruel deceits and hidden passions.

Highly Recommend

I am reading this series of books again after 20 years to see if I would enjoy them as much. These books are still as good to read at 37 as they were at 17.

Darker Than it’s Prequel, an Intense Sequel

Picking up almost immediately from the events of the first book, “Dark Angel” brings Heaven into the wealthy household and lifestyle of her deceased mother’s family. As Heaven thrives academically and comes into her own, this book also shows her sexual awaking as she overcomes her past trauma. Heaven’s upbringing makes her tougher, but family secrets and the ghosts of her past continue to haunt her. No longer a naive fearful child, Heaven is driven by ambitious and revenge, so much so that the reader sees a darker side to her. Leigh’s past is also slowly revealed as Heaven learns how deeply the abusive cycle goes in her family on both sides. Candace Thaxton returns once again to narrate the audiobook version, her performance bringing great emotion to the story - the shift in Heaven’s accent was a clever acting choice, which shows her adapting to the middle-class environment and moving away from her country roots.
Again, this book tackles abuse within the family home and how that shapes an individual, but this book actually weaves that in a harsh but compelling way throughout the plot. Seeing Heaven grow more in the book and the contrast in social class, but the sinister similarities makes this a great read. Darker than its prequel, “Dark Angel” brings back the past of both Heaven and Leigh in an intense and twisted sequel.

Great Read as always

Slowly going through all the VA Andrews books I read in paperback passed down from my mum. Now can't wait to read Fallen Hearts, the next one (3rd) in the Casteel series.
