About this listen

One mistake and those I love could die.

Hiding behind my brother and his friends has made it easy to keep my secrets, but since Merith came to Arda only months ago, my life has been wrecked. My father exposed, my brother obsessed...and now, because I let myself care about someone who is practically a stranger to me, I've been revealed as what I truly am.

This curse's hold over me is irrevocable, my life more entwined in it than I can manage on my own. Can I overcome my fears and let my family and friends help me, or hide within myself, determined to protect them from deadly truths only I can discern?

Clare Thorne has lurked in her older brother Kyle's shadow for years, making sure to avoid attention. What she can't avoid is her birthright, a curse that has become overwhelming in the wake of Merith Leigh's arrival at Arda Academy and the destruction it has sown in her life - with more to come. If the future holds nothing but ruin for those she loves, what can she possibly do to protect them from certain death?

Lots of Action and Dysfunctional Relationships

There is never a dull moment in Book 3 of the Arda Academy. It has been enjoyable to gain the perspective of the each of the three of the Lee/Thorne siblings and this book is presented from the perspective of the abrasive Claire who is an odd combination of self-sacrificing and self-absorbed. She would definitely benefit from some physical prowess in balance with her tongue lashing to enable her to be less of a physical victim. She just seemed to continually use poor judgment and walk into situations where she could not hold her own physically. There seemed to be little personal growth in this area. Are any of these siblings capable of working together?

A strong point of each of the books in this series is the absence of cliffhangers and finalization of the storylines there are always fascinating myseteries yet to unfold, It will be fun to discover the next plot direction and which character's perspective it will be told from.

As with Book 2 I would have liked to see more comprehensive editing. Pacing, coherence and character development and balance need work, Also more light and shade, action and pauses to allow us to get to know the characters better and how they interact. There are at times a little too much goody-two-shoes and saviour syndrome for my comfort. However it is a testament to the skill of the author, Molly Lavenza that the books still retain the reader's interest fully and the faults were easy to overlook. I really enjoyed listening to this fascinating series chocka block full of imagination and interesting puzzles.

The narration is very good though I would have liked a different narrator for each book. However, Carolyn Kashner always narrates so effectively and allows the reader to immerse completely into the story. That is a rare gift.

Questions

This book continues the story of the Lee/Thorne group! This one was a bit less exciting than the first 2 but still leaves you with plenty of questions as others get answered too!

good continuation

I've enjoyed this series, good narration and story building. I do agree it's a little slower than the first two books but still a good story. I'd recommend the series for a good easy listen.
