Summary
Der Köhler Peter Munk steht Tag für Tag im Wald und brennt Holzkohle. Er ist mit der Arbeit und seinem armseligen Leben unzufrieden. Schließlich geht er in den Hochwald. Dort trifft er zuerst den bösen Holländer-Michel. Er kann ihm aber entkommen und begegnet dem Glasmännlein. Das verspricht ihm drei Wünsche zu erfüllen. Peter Munk möchte besser tanzen können als der "Tanzbodenkönig" und eine stattliche Glashütte mit genug Eigenkapital. Beide Wünsche werden vom Glasmännlein erfüllt. Jedoch verspielt Peter das Geld im Wirtshaus und macht Schulden, so dass auch seine Glashütte gepfändet werden soll. Peter geht wieder in den Wald. Dort begegnet er wieder dem bösen Holländer-Michel. Dieser gibt ihm Geld, möchte als Pfand jedoch sein lebendes Herz.
Als Ersatz erhält Peter kaltes Herz aus Stein. Er ist nun ein hartherziger Geschäftsmann, der sogar vor dem Mord an seiner Frau nicht zurückschreckt. Beim Anblick seiner toten Frau erkennt er jedoch, dass es nicht so weitergehen kann und er sein "altes" Herz wieder möchte. Er geht wieder zum Glasmännlein...
