Thought-provoking, kaleidoscopic, fun

This short-story collection feels like a kaleidoscopic reframing of past stories combining to create a new and interesting whole. It's also a lot of fun.

You don't have to have read any of Roger Ley's previous works, though it can certainly at depth to this collection, it's not necessary.

Instead what you get here are familiar characters seen from lots of different angles encountering situations that occur on the edge of the possible or soon possible. It's a wild ride, and a joy for fans of tangible science-fiction but the sheer range of possibilities, makes you think about how interconnected and fluid all things are. Much to enjoy here and indeed I can see myself re-listening to this soon.

Great collection of tales

This review is for the Audiobook edition narrated by Craig Bowles.

An eclectic collection of short stories in various genres including Artificial Intelligences, Space Elevators, Time Travel, Robots, Steampunk, Fantasy, Horror, Magic and Romance. Some of the tales are excellent and thought provoking, some are quite humourous and a few didn't really appeal to me but on the whole it is a very entertaining collection. Narration is good and the book is well worth a read or a listen.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author and am voluntarily writing an honest and unbiased review.

Very short stories, but nonetheless completely satisfying.

"What if?" I am sure we have all felt prompted to ask at some time. There are whobooks that speculate how different history might have been had someone made a different decision. Roger Ley's book asks a lot of questions. He presents the reader with enough to stimulate interest and then stops leaving the reader to forward think to how the narrative might have continued. There is a sufficient variety of plots to maintain the Reader's interest. The names of the characters occur again and again so the reader feels some engagement with them and is sufficiently invested to care about them. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, Craig Bowles' performance as ever brings each character to life.

Great collection of short stories

A great collection of short steampunk, fantasy, time travel, and bizarre stories from Roger Ley.
We have humans and humanoids. Mary is one, and I ended up feeling sorry for her. The characters and stories are entirely different from anything I've read, apart from previous stories in this universe. I loved the disclaimer before the pandemic story—how fortuitous and quite accurate, even though it was published two years prior.

The narration was excellent, and the stories are varied but similar and highly engaging. At no point did I think I could guess what was coming next, which was great.

I highly recommend this book/audio and have done so to friends. I keep saying this about this author, but it's true: Pick up his books and try them.

Craig Bowles is a great narrator. He did wonders with the characters and was easy to listen to. I speeded up the narration to 1.2 on Audible.

Short stories but really interesting

I do love this collaboration of author and narrator and listening to something by them makes me smile, they are so good. The stories have such an interesting twist to them - love how they are short but works well. It reminded me to listen to the other books in this series (you don't have to at all, I just wanted to recapture the vibe). Wow an elevator to Mars, I know this has also been done recently in a movie that I saw - but l liked the twist, thought it was that but it was good to be confirmed.

Quirky and humorous

Another great collection of the weird and wonderful from Roger Ley. Sprinkled with comedy and thought provoking, the tales really get you thinking "what-if...?". Some of the tales worked better than others for me I have to say, but the collection moves at such a pace that it's not long before one that really engages you lands again.

Superb Collection

This is an excellent collection of around 50 short stories from Roger Ley. Most are very good although there are odd ones that didn't appeal to me but overall a good 90 percent probably did. A great mixture to suit all tastes. I loved the android ones in particular and Mary was ace! LOL! Craig Bowles did his usual superb job of the narration. Highly Recommended.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the author and leave this honest review voluntarily.
