About this listen
What do you do when the only skill you ever learned was how to kill, when you’re among the best of the best, but they tell you you can’t do that anymore? What do you do when they send you home from Afghanistan and tell you to get a job, like everybody else?
But you’re not like everybody else.
After eight years as a trooper in the SAS, fighting the secret, untold wars in the deserts and the jungles of the world, Harry Bauer has been kicked out for attempting to assassinate Mohammed Ben Amini, the Butcher of Al-Landy. He’s been sent home to New York, where he was raised an orphan 'til he was old enough to split and join the special forces.
Now he’s back, and unemployed—until Russian Mafia boss Peter Rusanov offers him a job wiping out the Albanian Mafia. It’s a job he figures could make him rich, until Colonel Jane Harris shows up, takes him for a ride to Pleasantville, and tells him about Cobra.
Then all hell breaks loose.

Violent covert operative thriller.
I am a big fan of Blake Banner's Dead Cold series and I like to listen to the audiobook version of a book when I cannot read the book - switching between the two formats as and when. I was therefore delighted to find that Blake Banner's latest series featuring Harry Bauer is available on audiobook. I was hoping for the sparkling dialogue which characterises the Dead Cold books. There are snippets of that, but the overriding characteristic is outright deadly violence - to the extent that I believe it is over the top in that respect.
Gary Bauer is like a cross between James Bond and Bourne, with a bit of Victor the assassin and Jack Reacher thrown in - with twice the body count. The plot is vaguely feasible and most of the deaths are perhaps justifiable if totally illegal, but you do have to suspend disbelief a lot methinks. If you enjoy fast paced action then this may be for you. If the death rate per page( Bauer -induced that is)falls to to more likely levels in future outings I will probably be tempted - but the next Bauer is not going to be the top of my read next list I'm afraid - I've still got some Dead-Cold books to read - they are not on audiobook alas - so Harry Bauer will be on the shelf for a while yet.
The narration is as you would expect from Ray Porter.

Disappointing
I was expecting an intelligent unpredictable plot and lots of entertaining action and adventure. Found predictable blurb sprinkled with outdated social ideas.
