Summary

Up to usual standard
QJ rarely fails to deliver the goods and this book continues that tradition. Well plotted with an ensemble cast of characters from the Bob Skinner universe. If I had one quibble it would be that the capture of the killer is only implied but that doesn't deflect from the overall story. Recommended.

Couldn’t stop listening
I have enjoyed all the Bob Skinner books, but for some reason I enjoyed this one the most. Can’t wait for the next book.

Another excellent installment!
Brilliantly played out, and well anchored within the pandemic world we all now inhabit.
Loved this latest, excellent installment into Bob Skinner's world, and that of his cohorts, with the usual superb characterisation by James Bryce.
I shall eagerly await the next one!

what an ending.
compling story. Very different in style but as usual brilliantly written and performed. Characters continu to develop, making you want to know more. can't wait for next instalment. HIGHLY recommended to all those who love crime fiction.

Not much crime involved
I usually enjoy Bob Skinner books but I gave up on this one about a third of the way through. Was still waiting for a crime to happen but got bored with the wait. OK if you just want to hear what the ex cops are doing now I suppose !

So slow
I really wanted to enjoy this book, really, really! But, it was dreadful, like watching paint dry and then an unresloved ending. Very disappointing indeed. All the previous books have been interesting and engaging, this one wasn't. Every sentence was an exposition, the conversations were tedious (no-one ever speaks like these) and generally unsatifying overall.
The crime / s seemed peripheral to the other storylines, which were dull in the extreme. Red herrings all over the place, it was if a lorry of them had overturned with nowhere to go.
The narration, for me, was fine. With so many characters all having come from roughly the same area (Central Belt) it must be very difficult to come up with different voices and sustain them over so long. Whilst it may have been patchy in places I admire the skill of the narrator.
The reader / listener has been cheated with the very unsatifactory end to the 'mystery'. I'll be returning this book, it's such a shame as it could have been handled so much better.
