Summary

Lady Frances Ffolkes finds more trouble than expected in this second cozy mystery from R. J. Koreto.

Lady Frances Ffolkes is incensed when she finds out that her dear friends Gwendolyn and Thomasina have been subject to vicious threats. Promising to uncover their attacker, she travels with them to Kestrel's Eyrie, the fabled estate belonging to Gwen's family. But soon Frances faces an even greater problem, when Gwen's father, a powerful diplomat, is stabbed to death with his prized ruby dagger.

Frances, with her loyal maid June Mallow at her side, jumps right into interrogating the estate's numbered guests: a charming Turkish diplomat with a habit of sneaking off into the night, a brash American heiress with lofty dreams of becoming mistress of the Eyrie, two gossiping widows with their own scandalous secrets, and Gwen's own aunt tasked with keeping the affairs of the estate in order among the chaos of the investigation. But as the case unfolds, Frances' righteous conviction might just be the very thing that leads danger - and even more death - to her own doorstep.

Old sins do indeed cast long shadows in Death Among Rubies, a delightful closed-room mystery in the vein of Agatha Christie and the second in R. J. Koreto's effortlessly charming historical series.

Interesting light afternoon romp

This is a gentle mystery story with good undertones of womens suffrage movement. A bit predictable but great to listen to on journeys or doing crafts! Lovely.

Five stars though not pure English

First a disclosure: I am English, and a purist as regards language.

That meant that I had to choose whether or not to make a mental adjustment as I listened. This is a good book, but I had to decide during the opening chapters to accept the fact that it is written by an American primarily for American readers. The principal character is an English aristocrat in1907 who would never have uttered words or phrases such as "gotten" or "figured out", for example. Similarly, the narrator's accent is not at all English upper class.

I chose to make the mental adjustment, which enabled me to enjoy a well written story with some interesting characters. I can't give 5 stars for the narration because the voices did not vary as much as they should ... but overall, 5 stars for the pleasure of listening to a good book.

A Jewel of a Story

An independently, minded woman in Edward Ian England. The first glimmering of women's rights.

Ok

I’m glad I didn’t have an alcoholic drink every time a character said “my lady” as I would be squiffy for a month. Very irritating and detracted from an otherwise enjoyable read.

Entertaining mystery

Lady Frances is deservedly smug as she solves yet another series of murders. The redoubtable Mallow and the imperturbable Hal are my favourite characters

Death Among Rubies

Another great murder mystery to solve but there is more going on than first meets your eye. But as more people die it becomes clear this is not as straightforward as the local police would have you believe. Read brilliantly again by Justine Eyre.

Really enjoyed this book

This is the second book and I really enjoyed the first one. Would make a really good tv series. Only niggle is the Americanisms… it’s set in England but we say Autumn… not Fall… if you can get over that (and a few others) it’s a really nice cozy listen. Looking forward to the next book 📕
