Another harrowing case for Detective Moses Byone and his new partner, Armond.Perhaps if they had known their client, Marcel, better they would not have agreed to deliver four heavy chests to his home. When Marcel is murdered, they have to hide the chests and try to find out why and by whom he was killed. The answer to this latter question is totally unexpected.

Set in the often seedy and atmospheric areas of New Orleans, the 'Voodoo' detective gets to meet some rather colourful characters. For anyone yet to start this series, this would be a good place to begin as it is not reliant on any former knowledge from previous books and even Moses reintroduces himself. Nicholas Patrella is, again, the narrator and his is quite a task. Not only does his give smooth and distinctive voice to all of the characters but he also has to tackle phrases in French and Creole, which he does with aplumb, though sometimes with a strange accenting, but perhaps that is how it is spoken there. He also enthusiastically adds laughter and raised voices where called upon to do so in the text. However, he does have an initially disconcerting hesitancy at times when reading between conversations.but ignore this: the effect quickly ceases to intrude. Overall, a good performance.

This is an enjoyable book in an unusual series. The first three stories are best heard in order but this, the fourth, can be safely read without previous knowledge, as mentioned before. I was very fortunate in being gifted my copy of Death on Canal Street by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. My thanks. The more of this series I hear, the better I like it..

Brilliant

Coming after the end of the trilogy, I had my reservations about this novel. But it was brilliant! Detective Moses Byone was as brilliant as he was during the trilogy and the plot itself was good. Fleshman has a talent for smooth story telling, fast pacing and characterisation.

Just couldn't get into it due to the narrator

Narrators are a very personal issue and for me this particular narrator did not make the book enjoyable. I just couldn't get into the book so I can't really comment on what it is like. Someone else might thoroughly enjoy it.
