Il corpo di un avvocato noto in città viene trovato morto in una macchina. Sembra semplice per la polizia locale trovare il colpevole, visto che in poco tempo un uomo viene interrogato e poi indotto a confessare l'omicidio. Purtroppo, però, c'è una certa differenza tra l'arrestare qualcuno e il fare giustizia.
E questa differenza è la molla che spinge i due protagonisti di questo romanzo a perseguire un'indagine che per le autorità competenti è già chiusa. L'oscurità che avvolge i due ragazzi - lui il figlio del reo confesso e lei l'orfana della vittima - complica però la soluzione del caso. Quando si cerca nel passato possono emergere persone e storie che danno nuova luce anche al nostro presente. È così che i due ragazzi scoprono che nessuno è chi diceva di essere. Forse i due genitori, vittima e carnefice, sono stati e sono ancora, al contrario, il carnefice e la vittima.
Higashino ci porta in una Tokyo in cui niente è ciò che sembra e l'ossessione muove tutti i personaggi in una strada sempre più efferata e pericolosa.
