Summary
As the Horus Heresy divides the Imperium, Corax and his few remaining Raven Guard escape the massacre at Isstvan V. Tending to their wounds, the bloodied Space Marines endeavour to replenish their numbers and return to the fray, taking the fight to the traitor Warmaster.
Distraught at the crippling blow dealt to his Legion, Corax returns to Terra to seek the aid of his father - the Emperor of Mankind. Granted access to ancient secrets, Corax begins to rebuild the Raven Guard, planning his revenge against his treacherous brother primarchs. But not all his remaining warriors are who they appear to be.
The mysterious Alpha Legion have infiltrated the survivors and plan to destroy the Raven Guard before they can rebuild and threaten Horus's plans.

I am literally this far into the Horus Heresy books and this was very well written, loved the narration and build up.

Good entry in the series
Better than expected as had read lists which has this as one of the Heresy novels to skip. Raven Guard, Alpha Legion, a brief cameo from The Emperor. Not sure about the narration in a few scenes

Losses and Victories
The aftermath of Istvaan, and the further evolution of the histories of both the Raven Guard and the Alpha Legion. I really enjoyed this, trying to see who would double-cross who in the end!

A great Horus Heresy novel for fans of the Alpha Legion and Raven Guard
This has always been a favourite HH novel of mine. A nice change of pace from pitched battles between the Legions, this is almost a spy thriller with the Alpha Legion’s infiltration of the Raven Guard and Kiavahr plus learning bits about the Primarch Project on Terra. I still never quite remember which of the Raven Guard characters are ‘Alpharius’ so it always leave me guessing. I felt some of the voices didn’t quite land for me but that may just be because I have not listened to this narrator much before. Overall a great story.

Corax the conflicted
Brilliant book, Corax out of all the Primarchs is one of the most interesting as he seems to have the most vulnerability and humanity. he struggles with the betrayal at Isstvan, the destruction of %95 of his legion. At times melancholy and doubtful other times filled with vengeful purpose and iron will. The story picks up form when Valerius and Branne rescued the remaing Raven Gaurd (told as a previously released story in Shadows of Treachery) The story follows Corax as he trys to rebuild his legion taking him to Terra and then Kiavahr. the narrative of Corax's rebellion as a boy in the prison to rebel leader to eventual meeting of the Emperor to Primarch of a legion, is cut into the main story as it moves along. never jarring and always fitted in neatly. The book has action, maybe not as much as others but still has it, and seeing how the Alpha legion are involved, it won't surprise you they use subterfuge not guns out brawling. overall a brilliant story of betrayal, duplicity dedication. love for your legion and death to the traitors.

Stronger focus on story than action
This book does a good job of showing the practical steps taken by the loyalists after the dropsite massacre and the Corax's attempt to rebuild his Legion. Where the book is let down however is with the flashback sequences to deliverance which tend to drag on and don't help to flesh out the supporting cast. Apart from that the story is quite thrilling even if you're not a raven Guard fan.
