Der junge Goldschmied Franz wird von seinem Meister nach Frankfurt geschickt. Auf dem Weg dorthin beraubt und entführt man ihn. Unvermittelt findet er sich in einem fantastischen, von Geistern bewohnten Schloss wieder. Hier soll er eine zerrissene Goldkette wiederfinden und damit einen Fluch brechen. Lange kursierte das Bild vom Dorfpfarrer Eduard Mörike, der lediglich verträumte Lyrik schrieb. Doch das wird Mörike und seinem Stil nicht gerecht. So verbirgt sich in der märchenhaften Hülle von Der Schatz eine abgründige Satire auf den württembergischen Hof - gelesen von Hans Paetsch.
