Summary

Winner of the British Book Awards, Popular Fiction Award, 2009.
Nominated for the Audiobook Download of the Year, 2008.This new instalment in the adventures of the world's most iconic spy has been written by one of Britain's most admired novelists, Sebastian Faulks.

"My novel is meant to stand in the line of Fleming's own books, where the story is everything." said Faulks, "In his house in Jamaica, Ian Fleming used to write a thousand words in the morning, then go snorkelling, have a cocktail, lunch on the terrace, more diving, another thousand words in late afternoon, then more Martinis and glamorous women.

In my house in London, I followed this routine exactly, apart from the cocktails, the lunch and the snorkelling."Picking up from where Fleming left off in 1966 with The Living Daylights / Octopussy, Faulks has written the perfect continuation of the James Bond legacy.

Devil May Care is set during the Cold War and features all the glamour, thrills and excitement that one would expect from any adventure involving Bond... James Bond.

Critic reviews

"Jeremy Northam's accents intensify the book's 1960s atmosphere nicely, but we soon realise that there is purpose as well as fun here. The Iran-set novel reminds us of how much damage our colonial past has done to our present. Its evil mastermind had a scheme to saturate British cities with heroin, and another to acquire The Times and other newspapers to destroy the credibility of British politics. Older, less lascivious, and beginning to creak at the joints, Bond is feeling his years. But he is still a man of infinite resource and sagacity and now likes pepper - cracked, not ground - on his scrambled eggs." ( The Times)

Great Bond romp

I really enjoyed this, it was in the true spirit of Bond stories, fun, exciting, well told and engaging. The only thing that spoilt it for me, was the ridiculous physical handicap of the villain - I appreciate they're all traditionally "odd", but this stretched the boundaries a bit far for me.

Bond at his best

This was my first Audible experience and it has set a very high standard for others to follow. I loved the book itself which has all the action and intrigue that you expect from Bond as well as that little bit of romance. I also think Jeremy Northam should be made to record every audio book in existence as, not only does he have a gorgeous voice, his characterisations were all distinct and beautifully performed. I like to listen to books while I walk my dog. He was wondering why he was going for three walks a day! Brilliant!

Old school Bond fun.

What did you like most about Devil May Care?

Loved the style, it's very much in the vain of Ian Fleming and catches the essence of the early Bond stories.

Have you listened to any of Jeremy Northam’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Haven't listened to any other of his performances.

Excellent

If you could sum up Devil May Care in three words, what would they be?

Set in the 60's so no mod cons and no fancy gadgets. Great.

What other book might you compare Devil May Care to, and why?

This is my third of fourth Bond book and the most enjoyable. it is also a very believable villain and plot. Excellent narration. Five stars.

What about Jeremy Northam’s performance did you like?

The characters come to life in your mind's eye and each is recognisable in their own right thanks to the narrator and his accents.

A faithful recreation of a memory

This is a book that captures the time and places it depicts, while recreating the Character and idiosyncrasies of its creator, plus all the expected set pieces and a faithful representation of the expected plot.

For a book created in six weeks by Faulks, with a certain disdain for not being real writing it achieves the necessary amounts of entertainment and creativity.

The formula works especially when delivered by a master. entertaining and well paced with a great understanding of the genre.

rollicking adventure

Enjoyed this and the narration was good. Plot was a little convoluted and stretched belief a little. Everything else was okay.

Is this really bond

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not one for writing I thought I should at least say something about this book.

This was/is a very bland listen/read. I would not be surprised if this was taken from another story line and had all the names changed to make it a Bond book.

You can tell this was for the screen not the home reader and I would not recommend this to others.

Would you ever listen to anything by Sebastian Faulks again?

Never say never
I will try another one of his books just to see, just not if he writes another Bond book.

What about Jeremy Northam’s performance did you like?

Jeremy did a good job with the tools he had to work with is the best way I can put it.

Did Devil May Care inspire you to do anything?

It indeed inspired me t by another book quickly and clear this from my mind.
