Summary
Alex Kingston reads her brand-new novel featuring River Song, from the worlds of Doctor Who.
1939, New York. Private-eye Melody Malone is hired to find a stolen ruby, the Eye of Horus. The ruby might hold the secret to the location of Cleopatra's tomb - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies.
Can Melody escape the ruby's curse?
1939, New York. River Song, author of the Melody Malone mysteries, is forced to find a reality-altering weapon, the Eye of Horus - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies. River doesn't believe in curses - but is she wrong?
From the top-security confines of Stormcage to the barbarism of first-century Egypt, River battles to find the Eye of Horus before its powers are used to transform the universe. To succeed, she must team up with a most unlikely ally - her own fictional alter ego, Melody. And together they must solve another mystery: is fiction changing into fact - or is fact changing into fiction?

Slip and Slide
Overall, a well-read story that fits in with the River Song storyline. Fans of Doctor Who and River Song will love this.
The Ruby's Curse continues the story of Melody Malone; a character invented by River Song to help The Doctor in the TV episode Angels Take Manhatten. This story flows nicely between the Melody Malone part as it's being written by River, and the River Song part, as being lived by River whilst locked up in the Stormcage prison; giving us two stories in one.
While the story does read well and it's great having it narrated by River Song herself, I did wonder if there were elements from the TV series that were just shoe-horned in to try to appeal to the fans of the show: The escape from Stormcage very similar to how River escapes in The Time of Angels (season 5), the character with body parts taken from the Raxacoricofallapatorian Slitheen family to name a couple. The former I found annoying because it's too familiar - although it was changed slightly, the effect was the same. I also saw no need within the plot to mention the Slitheen, other than to repeat the ridiculously long planet/race name.
However, the story is a good one, and takes us back and forward through time, in both reality and fiction. It's not a long read/listen, and for fans, it's well worth picking up. I'd be more than open to reading/listening to a book focussing solely on Melody, or River, in the future - without the added Doctor Who references - and I'm a huge Doctor Who fan.

Alex Kingston, is 100% genius!
I knew I’d enjoy this, but never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined how amazing this would be! Alex you are brilliant, and I really hope you read this comment. I loved listening to your voice reading your story, moving seamlessly from one character to another, and being that person, or cat and not anyone else. I loved the story and what you did with it within the constraints of what went before and came after from Doctor Who, I adored you including beloved Jack Harkness. I loved the richness of your writing and the colour of the red, which for me shon the whole way through. You are so talented, well done and thank you. Jenny.

doctor who at it's best
An intriguing tale about the beloved character River Song, this story delves into the character's past and is centered around a mysterious figure known as Melody. Filled with unexpected twists and turns, the plot seamlessly blends elements of Doctor Who while maintaining a distinct, unique feel. The only downside is that the use of time travel can be a bit confusing at times, but that is to be expected in a Doctor Who story

Satisfaction...
An absolutely rip roaring adventure. Funny, exciting, entertaining, intelligent, fast paced, absorbing. I could go on but might run out of space.
River Song is one of the all time greatest, if not the greatest, characters from the Multiverse/Multidimensional Doctor Who.
Finally, after such a long wait, we get to see the not so ordinary life of Professor Song.
The story is something fans have been craving & you won't be disappointed.
Hopefully Alex Kingston will be bringing more adventures out soon. She certainly knows how to leave you wanting more.
I really hope that this is the start of many more adventures from the renowned archaeologist. Alex Kingston has such a sultry voice & it's fantastic to hear her read her wonderful story.
I look forward to hearing more audiobooks that she stars in....
