Summary

With the arrival of six senior reading group members at the Merry Ghost Inn, the long-awaited grand opening week has finally begun for Melanie West and her grandmother Liza. All is well with the Oregon coast-side B&B until Melanie's dog, Max, finds the dead body of one of their guests.

Everyone at the inn immediately falls under suspicion, including the innkeepers themselves. Melanie and Liza are not sure who they can trust, and the idea of cohabitating with a murderer is enough to send chills down anyone's spine. To make matters worse, the curmudgeonly town detective wants them to steer clear of the investigation, but doesn't seem too inspired to solve the case in a timely fashion himself. To clear their own names and to avoid the blight on the inn's reputation that yet another dead body will bring, Melanie and Liza dive headlong into the murder investigation.

With a little help from their chuckling ghost, Melanie and Liza dodge the detective, tip-toe around their suspicious guests, and still serve up delicious bed-and-breakfast meals on time in Kate Kingsbury's delightful second Merry Ghost Inn mystery, Doom with a View.

Cliche ahoy!

The main character is a bundle of cliches crushed together - she is scared of her own shadow, has an all consuming hatred and bitterness of her ex-husband yet is desperate to date a man, and if she’s in trouble she just waits around for a ‘strong man’ to save her. The grandmother is supposed to have been from Britain, so drinks tea all of the time, when she isn’t eating fish and chips and saying “bugger”…and they both drink Chardonnay (because stereotypic women ALL drink Chardonnay!). The story is not engaging and seems like a secondary factor to the main character complaining about her ex and trying to ‘bag her man’. As a woman myself i am disappointed in how all of the female characters are exceptionally over emotional and seem terrified of everything.

cosy but fun

the narrater does get a little over excited at times but good fun and the very gentle 'deaths' are a minor intrusion.

Nowhere near as good as book 1

The story is very thin. Nothing really happens and the main character bellyaches a lot about wanting children. Her relationship with the cop is painful.

The saving graces are Liza and the merry ghost.

Ok

For a cosy mystery I wasn't happy to be reading about a woman who can't have children after an accident - not just a mention but how it affects her new relationship. Needed a trigger warning.

And some very odd ideas about the English, especially what we eat. Eg an old woman reminiscing wouldn't name sticky toffee pudding, as that's more recent, so that yet saying we still eat stuff my gran used too don't go together.

awful attempt at an English accent

The descriptions of the breakfasts served in the b&b are truly dire. Who serves Quiche and garlic potato for breakfast, and the author has no clue how to make proper scrambled eggs... and scone is pronounced as in gone not as in stone. only ppl in Yorkshire pronounce it as stone. The main character seems to be based on someone much older if the clothing, eg, sky blue blouse and black skirt, is anything to go by. A nice solid colour fitted linen dress would be a better choice for a young woman.

Doom

Narration was terrible. Too many dreadful accents to listen to for the whole of the book. VERY similar to far better books that I've thoroughly enjoyed!
Don't waste your time.

An easy listen

This a fun story. Lots of interesting characters. Struggled with the voice acting at times.

main character is annoying

The narrater is very good, as is the story, but the main character can be quite annoying: she wimpers and whines a lot, and I just want to grab her by the shoulders and tell her to "grow a pair". This is the only reason I've only given 14/15 stars, a completely personal choice.
