Enjoyable space opera

This is not hard Sci Fi. Minimal advanced invented Physics, few performance details of spacecraft or weapons.
It is rather a fairly complex ongoing story set in space with interesting characters, multiple secrets and subterfuge, alien AI, dastardly royal families with more secrets and agendas and some inconvenient romance in its infant stages.
Just good fun really. This is the 2nd book in the series and I have just been strongly motivated to buy the 3rd and 4th....now in my library and about to be started.
Oh and did I mention illegal but justified adoption of a displaced child .. and of course Emily Woo ZELLERs excellent narration of the audiobook - which is a big plus for me.
