About this listen
Monsters lurk beneath the roaring high seas....
When street rat Del stows away on a merchant vessel he’s worried about staying hidden, not sea monsters. But when a kraken attacks, Del is thrown overboard and finds himself stranded on a desert island, one of three survivors. Rescue is impossible when they discover the kraken still lurking in the surrounding waters, desperate for the dragon eggs one of them is carrying.
Del, wealthy merchant’s daughter Etenia, and former dragon rider Lathan must find a way off the island before the kraken finishes them. Del has only ever heard rumors of dragon riders and thought those stories were myths, but now Lathan’s clutch of dragon eggs is their only hope. But Del knows all too well that he can only rely on himself, so how is he supposed to bond with a dragon?
He’ll need to learn quick or the monster in the deep will get him. Help isn’t coming and the only way off the island will be on the back of a dragon. Can Del really rely on his companions and a dragon hatchling? Or will his only hope of escape be to go it alone?

slow paced story preparing dragonriders
This is a book about class struggles, and how people of different backgrounds and worldviews can work together and become friends.
While this book is about dragon riders, the dragons themselves aren't heavily featured in the early parts of the story. If you're going into this book expecting them to be flying through the skies by chapter 3 then you may get disappointed.
The author's ability to portray different worldviews and how they clash is top notch, though the constant cycle of fighting followed by incremental steps towards friendship can feel drawn out at times.
I like the clash of worldviews, but it feels too drawn out.
compared to other books, this is definitely slow-burn, expect it to take most of the book for the riders to actually start riding their dragons.
The reader of this audiobook needs to be more expressive and letting emotions shine through.

Did not fully connect with the main character
I love dragons and liked the dragons here too, but I did not bond well with the main character Del. I found him disappointing, though I get that his upbringing doesn't leave much for compassion... Still, I don't think I will continue this series even if the end of book 1 leaves some interesting leads in the air.
This was maybe not for me, but I believe many other fans of dragon and their riders will enjoy this book.
