Summary

As seen on Living Wild: How to Change Your Life, a two-part prime-time series on Channel 4.

On the precipice of starting her adult life, aged 18, Sophie, a rebellious and incorrigible wild child, crashed her car and was instantly paralysed from the chest down. Rushed to hospital, everything she had dreamed for her life was instantly forgotten, and her journey to rediscover herself and build a different life began. But being told she would never walk again would come to be the least of her concerns.

Over the next 18 years, as she strived to come to terms with the change in her body, her relationships were put to the test; she had to learn to cope with the many unexpected and unpredictable setbacks of living with paralysis; she had to overcome her own and other people's perceptions of disability and explore the limits of her abilities, all whilst searching for love, acceptance, meaning, identity, and purpose.

Driving Forward is a remarkable and powerful memoir, detailing Sophie's life-changing injury, her recovery and her life since. Strikingly honest, her story is unusual and yet relatable, inspiring us to see how adversity can be channelled into opportunity and how ongoing resilience can ultimately lead to empowerment.

Honest, real, raw & gripping

First time I’ve ever felt compelled to write a review of an audio book. Sophie writes and speaks in a way that has you feel she’s sharing her story with you personally. I was absolutely gripped from start to finish and the detail in which recovery was covered was just extraordinary.

Sophie, thank you for sharing this with us. As a fully able bodied ally, my eyes are forever opened.

So beautifully human

Growing up as a young girl with a spinal cord injury (SCI), I wish I'd had someone like this to look up to. To know that I could be whoever I wanted, have fun and push boundaries, strive for more, be happy and fulfilled, and also hear from someone who really understood the tough lows of living with disability. Someone once told me that having an SCI is the gift that keeps on giving (in good and bad ways), and I thought about this many times hearing Sophie's story. I cannot recommend this highly enough - a powerful story told with humanity, honesty and hope. Thank you for writing it.

Read this book now. It’s an incredible, impossibly honest, human account of what it takes to rebuild your life after change or trauma and it’s relevant to anyone who’s ever struggled, or who fears living their life to the fullest. You’re amazing, Sophie. X
