About this listen

Duma Key combines the appeal of Cell and Lisey's Story - two of Stephen King's most successful novels of all time - to take the legendary author to a whole new level. Read by John Slattery.

Duma Key is the engaging, fascinating story of a man who discovers an incredible talent for painting after a freak accident in which he loses an arm.

He moves to a "new life" in Duma Key, off Florida's West Coast - a deserted strip, part beach, part weed-tangled reef, owned by a patroness of the arts whose twin sisters went missing in the 1920s. Duma Key is where out-of-season hurricanes tear lives apart and a powerful undertow lures lost and tormented souls.

Here, Freemantle is inspired to paint the amazing sunsets. But soon the paintings become predictive, even dangerous. Freemantle knows the only way forward is to discover what happened to the twin sisters and uncover the secret of the strange old lady who holds the key.

The story is about friendship, about the bond between a father and his daughter, and about memory, truth and art. It is also is a metaphor for the life and inspiration of a writer, and an exploration of the nature, power, and influence of fiction.

Please note: this is a vintage recording. The audio quality may not be up to modern day standards.

Critic reviews

"Written by the man who once memorably called himself 'the literary equivalent of a Big Mac with fries' - this is supreme, page-turning storytelling; the sort of popular fiction that comes along only rarely and only from a writer at the top of his game." (Daily Mail)

Creepy and atmospheric

What did you like most about Duma Key?

Great story, a typically masterful character study by King. The horror, humor and description are all captivating. As usual, the language and story are spot on. The narration is perfect throughout. I read this in hardback when it came out in 2008, and really enjoyed re-reading via Audible and made me want to re-read more by King (it's a shame we don't get the same breadth of back-catalog as our American brethren, but maybe that will come in time).

Well read!

Duma key isn't my favourite Stephen King novel by far but I very much enjoyed John Slattery's performance of it.

Thought provoking

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Worth listening - a thought provoking book, very well written, as always, from Stephen King. Another usual concept with absorbing characters.

Any additional comments?

Unfortunately I listened to this book after 11.22.63 which was amazing, so I don't think I really gave it a fair try. I will listen to it again, and may review again.

Classic King

Great book, kept me hooked till the end. It's a little slow but was worth the wait. Really liked the characters.

My First Stephen King Book

It's about time I got round to reading a Stephen King book. But I get the impression this wasn't one of his best. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad. I quite enjoyed a lot of it. I thought the characters were great and the setting was good, but, i found it quite long winded, especially the first half. It could have had a hundred or so pages taken out of it in my view.

This won't put me off reading any more Stephen King book. I just think I chose the wrong one to start reading out his collection.

Best Stephen King so far...

I think this is a less well known Stephen King book (I certainly had never hear of it) but thought I would give a try...at first, the dialogue was quite aggressive and it wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy it, but then it suddenly started to make sense and moved into top gear - it all started to make sense and put the rest of the story in context. This is a great book - probably one of my favourite Stephen King books - thoroughly recommend!

Superb King, beautifully read.

I really enjoyed this. I’ve had it some years and have listened multiple times. I like the relationship between Edgar and Wireman particularly, and the story works well. It’s beautifully performed, too.

Gripping tale!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Stephen King is a master in his trade and this book is a fabulous example of how he can transport you into the tale that he is weaving and grip you close to the last line.

Any additional comments?

King at his very best!
