About this listen

A charming childhood memoir (with postcards from the present) from food writer Damien Trench, protagonist of BBC Radio 4's critically acclaimed sitcom In and Out of the Kitchen, as told to News Quiz presenter and star of Rev, Miles Jupp.

'I have just had one of those absolutely mad mornings when you go out to have a browse at tagines and end up coming home with a brand-new gas ring expander. I think I was probably as surprised as anybody. Sometimes life is just like that, isn't it?'

Award-winning food writer Damien Trench takes you on a journey through his childhood and his early inspirations - culinary and otherwise - with occasional diversions to the present.

When I first heard the voice of Damien Trench in ‘In and Out of the Kitchen’ my life changed. I felt I’d met a kindred spirit and thoroughly enjoyed the journey he took me on.

I can’t get enough. It’s nice to hear the back story, but I simply want more x

Very amusing

Having enjoyed in and out of the kitchen I was not disappointed with this offering. It is a monologue rather than dramatised but still a very enjoyable listen.

Worryingly funny.

This is a delightful book that made me laugh out loud whilst listening to it in the car. I think I worried the other drivers at the traffic lights.
I love the radio series and this book continues to riff successfully on the same theme. There is the same masterful understanding of how far to satirise Damian's type of personality without pushing it so far that it becomes too embarrassing to bear.
I love the character, and I love his recipes, especially the over the top shepherds pie, and I love his nearly self aware asides. All his diversions are amusing and the main stories are very funny. Poor old Damian he has had a lot to put up with in his life!
I find myself agreeing with his gripes about so many things even when I know that other people would laugh at me for doing so. I look forward to hearing about his early adult life; leaving Oxford and a PPE degree for catering college must have been quite a change!!

An enormously enjoyable side-plate

This is an hugely enjoyable, beautifully written, and constantly funny spin-off, and I highly recommend it to any fans of the four series. Please can there be another..?!

Good but not great

Solid and gently witty with Miles giving his trademark Damien performance. Not as good as In and Out of the Kitchen though, as you quickly realise that Damien needs the rest of the ensemble to bounce off (and also to dilute his pomposity). That said, I enjoyed it a lot and it makes a perfect accompaniment to cooking the Sunday lunch 😀

Hilarious gentle comedy.

I love "In and Out of the Kitchen" on Radio 4 and this memoir offers us an insight into Damien Trench's childhood. What a singular young man he was. Admittedly, I'd listen to anything Miles Jupp produced but luckily this was brilliantly written.

Loved it

I truly adored listening to this book. It took me a short while to get used to not hearing all the characters from 'In and out of the kitchen' but as soon as I did, I was fully immersed in Damian's life as told by Damian himself. Wonderful book and I hope there is a sequel.

NB: Miles Jupp, if you read this review, I beg you to release series 4 of In and out of the Kitchen on Audible......Please......

Absolutely lovely

Damien Trench is adorable, completely unselfaware individual. I laughed out loud at some parts of his memoir and Miles Jupp's narration was just perfect.
