About this listen

According to a study published in Chief Executive Magazine, the most valued skill in leaders today is strategic thinking. However, more than half of all companies say that strategic thinking is the skill their senior leaders most need to improve. Elevate provides leaders with a framework and toolkit for developing advanced strategic thinking capabilities. Unlike the majority of books that focus on strategy from a corporate perspective, Elevate gives the individual executive practical tools and techniques to help them become a truly strategic leader. The new framework that will enable leaders to finally integrate both strategy and innovation into a strategic approach that drives their profitable growth is the Three Disciplines of Advanced Strategic Thinking:

  • 1. Coalesce: Fusing together insights to create an innovative business model
  • 2. Compete: Creating a system of strategy to achieve competitive advantage
  • 3. Champion: Leading others to think and act strategically to execute strategy

Every leader desperately wants to be strategic - their career depends on it. Elevate provides the roadmap to reach the strategic leadership summit.

Another Strategic Perspective

There are many past and emerging books that aim to frame strategy into a singular concept/tool kit, and this book is no different. The book is well structured and does have many pertinent points on what strategy is and the benefits for.

However, this book does not offer anything unique other than the perspective taken by the author based on his 15 year experience. As such, much of the information provided is sometimes rudimentary and often contradictory.

That said, the accompanying PDF is useful and many of the insights run parallel to current academic thought on modern strategy concepts.

Definitely not the only book you should read

Despite the blurb stating that it’s the only book you should read about the strategy, it’s not.

If there is one, it’s more likely to be the “Good strategy/Bad strategy”.

“Elevate” is OK, just OK. There are some good bits but overall it’s rather Ok (I’m leaning towards mediocre).

It’s written in the same vein as many other business books, ie. “do this and that” without spending much, or at all, on the “why”? So it’s rather shallow which in contrast what it tries to achieve - teach you about strategy and strategic thinking - a deeper understanding and the “why”.

If one has time, by all means fo ahead and listen. On the other hand, if you really need a good book about strategy and has little time go for “Good strategy/Bad strategy”.
