Summary

After the death of Emily Davis, school teacher and well-loved member of the local community, many of those who knew her cast their minds back to days past and to their memories of Emily.

Dolly Clare mourns her loss deeply but remembers with joy and warmth the long friendship they shared. She is joined in her reminiscences by Jane Draper, who started her teaching career under Emily’s guidance, and by those further afield - from London to America. This is both a poignant story of loss and a celebration of life, rich with affection.

The creation of a rural community with true to life characters

The author tells a variety of stories which highlight the virtues and foibles of people in a slowly changing community. It is heartening to have stories without bad language or trendy values.

Lovely heart warming story, some repeats

Another lovely, heartwarming tale of Fairacre. Although it’s about a death, it’s exploring all the ways in which Emily touched people’s lives which is just beautiful. I found there was some crossover with ‘Miss Clare Remembers’ which wasn’t great as I found myself drifting off as I already knew some parts.

The narrator sounded a bit too upper class for this story. Not the best.

Volume bad

Recording volume is hopeless. Gwen's every word tails off so I can hardly make it out.

Gentle Listening

A gentle easy listen. I am a fan of Miss Read and accept that plot is not the focus of these books. Instead it is of quiet lives in another time.

Loved it!

Gentle story just suited for these troubling times. Life of a country schoolteacher in the twentieth century.

Lovely, moving and beautifully written.

I love how beautifully Miss Read intertwines the events of various novels. I have recently read "The Market Square" and "Miss Clare Remembers" which, together with "Emily Davis," portray a fascinating picture of Caxley, Fairacre and Springbourne in the first half of the 20th century and beyond. Each book gives you new tidbits of the stories you already know and shows various situations from different perspectives.
"Emily Davis" is another piece of perfection by Miss Read, beautifully written and both moving and soothing. Most recommended!

Appalling narration !

Gave up on this, Gwen’s fluctuating delivery was so irritating, ends of words just lost! Why does Audible use her so much for Miss Read’s books? June Barrie or Carole Boyd are miles better!
