Summary

End of Watch is a compelling and chilling suspense novel which sees retired detective Bill Hodges back on the trail of his nemesis, Brady Hartsfield, the criminal the press called The Mercedes Killer.

Foiled in his attempt to commit a second mass murder, Hartsfield is confined to a hospital brain-injury unit in a seemingly unresponsive state. But all is not what it seems: Brady is able to influence both his physician and the hospital librarian to commit crimes in the outside world.

Now the technological genius has created a hypnotic electronic fishing game which compels users to commit suicide, and he is determined to target the three people who put him in hospital: Hodges and his sidekicks, Holly and Jerome.

Not his best work!

I love Mr King but I found this plot a little poor at best. It was weak and verged on the ridiculous. You still get some suspense but it's all very predictable. If you loved the other two books in this series, I would recommend you quit while you are ahead as this would just disappoint you.

Below average

This trilogy has steadily declined over the three novels released. The first novel Mr Mercedes was brilliant, dark, brooding and full of suspense. The second instalment was distinctly average having lost the dark edge of its predecessor. Which leads us to this final chapter of the trilogy: 'End of Watch'. It can best be described as plodding.

I found 'End of Watch' to be far below average, in fact for a Stephen King novel it was outright lazy. It was ridiculously far fetched with no real suspense, no shocks, no unexpected twists or turns and next to no new character development. It was as if King had become bored with the characters and was writing only to fulfil a contractual agreement.

I felt the character of Holly to be particularly annoying and her character is full of lazy stereotypes. I still enjoy the lead character Ret Det Kermit Hodges but he's been wasted here.

The final few chapters of the story felt odd, the social commentary on suicide felt clumsy and shoehorned in, again this jars with King's usual subtle and ironic style when he seeks to make a point or highlight a social issue.

The one plus point was the narration. As always Will Patton was great. His performance was the saving grace and kept me listening to the audiobook. I love his work when he's reading a King novel.

Final installment much better than the second

Compared to the second book this is so much better and has a good ending.

Brilliant

Just wish there could be more of Bill and Holly. Maybe Holly can hook up with another character.
The narrator is great.

Belief in a cruel God and makes a cruel man.

The conclusion to the trilogy is as usual for Stephen King very good and he has made a point of also making it very easy to join in even if you have not read the first two; also very useful to those that need a bit of prompting after a year's wait.

All the old characters are back and some new ones join in; as expected the supernatural side of the story takes a more visible development but as always with King the humanity of the characters is what counts the most, also his description of contemporary america and some of its problem. There is action and violence to satisfy most horror readers but it is not dehumanizing or needles splatter.

Here comes a personal observation, the supernatural stuff like fantasy does not work for me but that is because I do not believe in the supernatural at all, so I have to struggle through those parts in all books that have it.

A good entertaining finale, that will satisfy most readers, but do not expect major surprises, or changes in the old format, this is like a by the numbers chocolate cake, you get what you came for and no more.

The reading by Will Patton was excellent again, full of life and creativity.
