Compelling intriguing fight for life brilliant
- By Jacky on 17-01-22
Summary
Escape from Arcadia is a young adult fantasy, following the story of Cadderick and his battle for freedom. Cadderick (Cad) lives in a town called Arcadia that has been sealed by a magical barrier for centuries. No one can leave, no one can enter, as a result things are really restricted, marriages are arranged, food is rationed, and the population is controlled. They fear the outside, but they don’t know what is actually out there.
Cad hates that he is controlled, all of his choices made for him, he wants to be free to decide. He manages to slip out (with the aid of the sisters of fate - the gods), only to find the world isn’t as bad as everyone expected, however, he is caught up as part of a prophecy where again he wants no part of as, once again, it seems his future is decided for him.

Classic fantasy & great narration
Escape from Arcadia is a classic YA epic fantasy story with a prophesy about a foretold hero, an interracial ensemble and a naïve protagonist from a secluded town.
That having said, there are a handful of great ways the author has given his spin to these tropes, one of them being the fact that Arcadia isn't just some agricultural town. Arcadia has a bit of interesting history (no spoilers!)
The narrator does an amazing job, including even different voices for different characters, and he was clearly familiar with the story which made it all the easier to follow along.
Although I found myself struggling to feel fully engaged during a big chunk in the middle, the beginning of the story swept me away. I found it easy to connect with Kad from the start.
Sexual content: mild (some graphic mentions of male sexual functions that, in my opinion, felt a little jarring and unnecessary but any sex scenes were off screen)
Coarse Language: mild
Violence & gore: moderate
Conclusion
Classical tropes but with some cool twists, very strong start and good ending. I enjoyed my 'read'.

Enjoyable Listen
I felt a little confused by this book while I was listening. It was coming across very middle-grade/YA and I thought it was meant to be an adult fantasy. I checked on Amazon and saw the age range was 14-18 years which made the story align a little more with expectations. This is a note for anyone else who is a little confused by the category for this.
I really enjoyed the overall plot within this audiobook and was looking forward to how this would end. I felt that some characters seemed a little caricature-esque and could have benefitted from a little more rounding out. However, that didn't pull from the overall enjoyment of this book.
I am intrigued by the magic system within this universe, and was a little disappointed that it seemed to be a focal point but not shown enough. We can only hope it will be more centre stage in the next book.
If you're looking for a new epic fantasy series I would give this a try.
