About this listen

For more than 2,000 years, the Heart Sutra has been part of the daily life of millions of Buddhists. This concise text, so rich and laden with meaning, concentrates the very heart of Buddhism into a powerful and evocative teaching on the interdependence of all reality.

In Essence of the Heart Sutra, the Dalai Lama masterfully unpacks the Heart Sutra so that any listener can benefit from its teachings - teachings meant to help us release ourselves from suffering and live with true compassion.

Comprised of his "Heart of Wisdom" talks originally delivered to thousands of listeners in 2001, the book offers the Dalai Lama's commentary as well as his easy-to-follow overview of Buddhist philosophy that places the sutra within its historical and philosophical context.

With additional contributions by scholar and translator Thupten Jinpa, Essence of the Heart Sutra is the authoritative presentation of a text seminal to the world's religious heritage.

Deep and meaningful

A truly deep and meaningful book which is challenging and at times hard to grasp. In the end the message of compassion for others as a path of enrichment for yourself is worthy in itself.

Heart Opening Enlightenment

The Dalai Lama communicates an honourable, inclusive and empathetic approach to enlightenment - not just for one’s self but for the benefit of all - for each person does not intrinsically exist without other forms or factors that make up our life.

This book will definitely help you to realise the opportunities for altruism in your journey to enlightenment. All new things are born of change after all.

Great message, pronunciation needs work

I haven’t finished this yet, but so far I’m enjoying the content, though a little bothered by the author’s Americanised ‘Boo-dah’/‘Bood-ism’ pronunciation. I would have expected someone reading a book by the Dalai Lama to at least know how to pronounce his religion correctly! Though this irks me a bit, I’m still enjoying the rest of it, and I really enjoy how the Dalai Lama writes.

clear and concise summary of Buddhist wisdom

I liked the clarity and brevity. other side is that some parts it would be nice to elaborate on but where would they draw the line. reading isn't too flowery like some dharma books, but can feel a little robotic instead, not necessarily a bad thing though.

Disappointing

This book appears to just promote and focus purely on the so called 'positive' aspects religion. While minimising or ignoring the negative aspects.

Disappointingly the writer has fallen into the old trap of believing religion and spirituality are the same thing. There is a certain irony in that, as at the start of the book they acknowledge this very problem but continue to do it anyway.

They also have the frankly bizarre believe that it is only possible to be spiritual aware, kind/compassionate to others if you are religious. This is ridiculous and frankly narrow minded.
