I appreciated the balance between practical advice and emotional support, it didn’t feel preachy or overwhelming. Instead, it provided tools to rebuild self-confidence and focus on my own well-being while still holding space for hope. It’s comforting to know others have faced similar challenges and come out stronger. If you’re feeling lost or stuck in your journey as an estranged parent, this is the guidance you didn’t know you needed.

Making connecting easier
I got this book for my husband, who is estranged from his kids from a previous marriage. I can see that gap is really affecting him, but he said he had no idea how to bridge that gap. This book is very well written, and the content is easy to follow. I really think this book is helping him work on his personal stuff and he has recently reached out to his kids. Great book.

Bridging the Gap with Compassion
As a husband and dad to four kids, this audiobook hit home with its focus on navigating strained family relationships while staying grounded. It unpacks the emotional layers of estrangement—grief, guilt, hope—and offers a blueprint for finding resilience. My favorite chapter was the one on setting healthy boundaries while leaving the door open for reconciliation. It helped me see how personal growth and patience can transform strained dynamics, even if the outcome isn’t perfect. Joanne Harvey’s tone is empathetic yet empowering, making tough topics feel manageable. This is a meaningful listen for parents navigating distance or misunderstanding with their children or anyone seeking insight into healing fractured family bonds. It’s a roadmap to resilience with heart.

A balance of reflection and moving forward
I appreciated how the book balanced reflection with a forward focus. It encouraged me to examine my role in the relationship without judgment while also empowering me to build resilience. The exercises for setting boundaries and creating a fulfilling life outside of the estrangement were especially helpful. They reminded me that my life doesn’t have to revolve solely around this pain, and healing is possible even without immediate reconciliation.
