As a child in rural Bavaria, a single loaf of bread had to last his family all week. The hunger and deprivation he experienced during his early years perhaps explain his fascination with the limits of physical endurance. All his life, Herzog would embrace risk and danger, constantly looking for challenges and adventures.

This is incredible.
There is nothing else like this.
It takes the medium of audiobook to a higher level.
A greater piece of work than his movies.

An amazing read
This book is overflowing with stories, anecdotes, insights and wonderful information. I can not think of a more enjoyable recent book. I am so glad that my son recommended it to me.

Brilliant in every way, WH is a true creator of magical story telling.
This book had me laughing and crying and wanting more stories of his adventures.
I will for sure re-listen to this fabulous audiobook again and again.

Extraordinary
Like Tristram Shandy, Herzog's narrative jumps forwards and backwards through time but always circling into interlocking themes like a complex Venn diagram.
A wonderful book, thoroughly recommended to anyone interested in art, religion, philosophy, adventure etc. etc. etc.

A wild and educational journey!
Wildly entertaining and hilarious but also a dark and serious exploration of the human state. A wild ride - with endless surprises and crazy stories of treacherous adventures which leave you wondering which are true and which are exaggerations or fabrications. Only Werner Herzog himself could have narrated and this makes listening a joy. Going off now to read more about the Florentine Codex .....
