Suspenseful and fast paced

I am hooked on Katerina Carter books now. I loved her desperate attempt at saving her career by taking a difficult case. Little did she know just how difficult it would become. Katerina investigated as she would, but it lead her down a dark path that threatened her life and those around her. This book is suspenseful from the moment she accepts the job, I could not put it down. I easily got lost in the story and enjoyed every word.

Petrea Burchard has an easy to listen to voice. Burchard has a distinct tone for each character and keeps them all consistent. I enjoyed this narration and look forward to hearing more in the series.

Loved it!

I listened to this book via Audible, and really enjoyed it! The forensic accountant angle for a protagonist is a new and unusual one for me, but one that worked well. Katerina (Kat) Carter is struggling to keep her Practice – and her life – afloat, when she’s hired by Liberty Diamonds following a $5 billion dollar embezzlement. But the prologue showing a daughter trying to betray her arms-dealing gangster of a father gives us a steer that there’s much more going on here.

Kat is hired by the CEO to try and track down the missing funds, but soon uncovers clues to something much bigger going on. With her foolish uncle having invested much more than he can afford into Liberty Diamonds, and her own livelihood hanging in the balance, there’s a lot at stake.

Kat Carter is an interesting choice of protagonist, smart, yet vulnerable, but with a dogged determination that drives her to uncover the truth, even as the bodies start mounting up, and it’s clear that her own life is in grave danger.
Great characters, great story and great narration (even though I struggled not to liken Uncle Harry’s voice to that of Marge Simpson!)

Fab

This story was great.
It’s got so much detail into the crimes & characters it must have taken ages to research.
Such a change from the Witchy books. I love them & loved this!
The narrator was really good. Tempo spot and she kept the characters going so well.
Really fab start to I’m hoping is a new series.

Interesting story

Very interesting story, a twist on the murder mystery with money and diamonds mixed it. ( what more could a girl want aha) great story with a lot of detailing mixed it about diamond mining. Has a couple of dry moments in the explanations but these are needed to advance the storyline. I'd recommend this book as a great lazy listen

A well researched story

Listened to this one on audible. I was familiar with Colleen Cross’s writing as I’d also listened to one of her Westwick Witches’ series too. The narration across the two was fairly similar and I actually liked the narration more in this book. Although, I did keep linking voices in this one, to that book.

An intriguing tale of corporate fraud with twists a plenty. Never knew there was such a thing as forensic accountants and there was a lot of research into the diamond trade illicit and licit within this novel. I learnt a lot.

My gauge for a good series, is whether I’d read or listen to another. Would I? Yes, I would. Rather liked Kat’s tenacity and her need to have justice served. Pay attention, as there is a huge amount of detail that is integral to the story.

Who knew fraud could be this exciting?

This book was so different to any of the other thrillers I've read//listened to. Forensic accountancy wouldn't normally be my idea of fun, and I admit I did occasionally find it confusing., but I now understand much more than I did before reading this. There's blood diamonds, money laundering, insider trading, murder, and a heroine who just won't give up. The story is well crafted and fast paced with some genuine edge of the seat moments. and the narration was spot on.

A great listen with a little to much filler

I thought this had a great plot, story inside a story. The author does use more fillers than I like but it was an interesting listen that held my attention. There is a little bit of everything here, a little romance, excitement, thrills and a few chilling moments. The story is filled with danager at every turn with lovely twists and turns. What you will find between these pages is murder, a mafia family that you won’t want to mess with, bribery, terrorist and so much more.

I thought the narrator really brought this story to life, making it feel believable giving you a delightful narration that holds your attention. Her many different character voice are wonderful, she really hits the emotion right on the nail making you feel what each character is going through. I always knew who was talking and what they were feeling. There are no volume changes, no repeating of word, it was a great listen that I really had trouble putting down.

I really enjoyed listening to this and couldn’t wait to start the next one.

Diamonds, Organised Crime, Murder & Accountancy.

This really was a pleasant surprise, a murder mystery novel with a forensic accountant, Kat Carter, as its central character. The storyline is fascinating with several threads interwoven, lots of twists and turns, good pace and excellent writing. The narrator adds to the listening enjoyment making it a very immersive experience. I look forward to further audiobooks in the series.

A very suspenseful thriller

Who'd have thought a story that is mostly about the mining and economics of diamonds could be so thrilling. Yet Colleen Cross pulls it off. I knew a little about blood diamonds (mainly from watching a movie and researching afterwards) but not a great deal.
This book pulls together some quite extensive financial accounting details of the diamond trade, mob bosses, murder, kidnapping and makes a breathtaking chase against time. I was gripped by Katerina's investigation (even the numbers scenes where done with a nice pace) and twists and turns of the action. A very clever, interesting and well-written tale.
The audio was excellent, by Petrea Burchard, with great voices delineating characters, and keeping the pace of the story, it flowed in my ears, and listened to this in pretty much one sitting.
Overall a cracking first book, in a series, that I most certainly will carry on reading or listening to.

A really great read

A whirlwind story of murder, betrayal, underhand dealings, diamonds and a mafia boss. When Forensic Accountant Katerina Carter is hired to find a missing 5 billion dollars she uncovers layer upon layer of deception and soon realises that she can trust no one. A really great read with excellent narration by Petrea Burchard
