About this listen

In this funny romantic series, the Shackleford sisters descend on a Regency society that doesn't know what's hit it…

When Faith Shackleford found herself in the unenviable position of having to accompany her irascible father to convalesce in the genteel seaside town of Torquay, she envisioned three months of wearying monotony.

She certainly wasn't expecting to be intrigued by the forlorn empty house situated next to their own elegant villa, especially when she discovered it belonged to a handsome captain in the Royal Navy who was currently away at sea.

Unfortunately, she never imagined that fascination might cost her her life.

Roan Carew grew up an orphan on the streets of Torquay, until he was press ganged into the Royal Navy at eleven. Through a combination of determination, shrewdness and sheer bloody mindedness he rose to the rank of Captain, but he was certainly no gentleman nor ever would be. Indeed, his purchase of Redstone House, a rundown mansion in Torquay's wealthiest district was more of an impulse than an aspiration towards respectability.

He most certainly did not expect the house to come with a thirty-year-old secret that someone was prepared to commit murder to protect.

Naturally Reverend Shackleford, who it was generally agreed would be "in if he fell in," simply had to investigate…

Perfect for fans of funny, lighthearted Regency Romances with a little bit of steam.

Please re-record these without the male narrator’s squawking voices for a supposedly young heroine- sounds about 90!

Best story so far, but I find Elstob’s narration ugly, cringe-making and totally inexplicable. Who on earth has approved these voices for the sisters? They sound like rough, elderly barmaids. It doesn’t make sense.

The female narrator is perfect- just use her for them all.

It was very confusing

I lost track of the characters numerous times. The storyline was a bit of a flop and there was no romance.

Good story

I’ve read all the books in this series, really enjoyed them and based on that I bought the three audio books. I really don’t enjoy Mark Elstobs performance, particularly when he’s reading the women or Percy’s parts and sadly I’m unlikely to buy any future recordings if they are released.

The awful narration by one of the male narrators

I am so very disappointed. I did not realise this story was narrated by 5 narrators. I find it totally off putting. Hearing the narrators individuals takes on accents and how they perceive how the characters will talk. Most of the narrators interpret these quite well, but there is one male narrator, who is absolutely dreadful. He puts such a ridiculous accent and inflections on the characters, in particular, the Reverend Shackleford, his daughter Hope and his curate Percy. You just cannot take it seriously and it totally ruins the story as the narrators are all pretty similar. I have written this review after only listening to 3 chapters and I am not sure if I can continue. Instead I may just read the book. A total waste of money in the audio format. I have purchased the next 2 books in audio as I love listening to the stories, particularly when I am driving. I loved the first 2 books and I just pray they aren’t the same narrators for the next 2 books. I cannot understand why an author uses 5 narrators. I understand using 2 narrators, ie female & male. But 5 is ridiculous. Never again for me. It’s a shame as I love the stories. This has taught me to look who and how many are narrating. I always listen the the audio sample before I buy, to check I like the narrators voice, but the couple of minutes only gave the voice of 1 narrator!!!
