Critic reviews
"Slaughter offers us a high-stakes thriller that handles the tragedy of addiction with empathy and grace. Her heroines are believable, flawed and courageous." (Oyinkan Braithwaite, award-winning author of My Sister, The Serial Killer)
"A twisty, searingly contemporary mystery steeped in a dark past...catches your breath and keeps you gasping and guessing until the end." (Stacey Abrams)
"Karin Slaughter is a master of the thriller genre and her genius comes through on every page, in every character, through every plot twist." (Francesca Momplaisir, critically acclaimed author of My Mother’s House)

Wow, Believe the Hype!!!!
I had never heard of Karin Slaughter until I heard her being interviewed on BBC Radio 5. She came across as being very interesting and intelligent. I immediately looked up this book and pre-ordered it, I am so pleased I did. Four days later I’ve listened to the he whole thing, totally gripping and an amazing insight into the characters lives. I strongly recommend this novel so much so I have immediately bought another book by the same author.

Escapism from the pandemic this is not
Got really bored of hearing the authors very obviously impartial views on mask wearing and taking part in a mass experimental clinical trial. I got audible during the pandemic to have a break from it. Unfortunately every other word in this book was pandemic-related. I found the characters shallow in concept, as well as mainly unlikable, and the story both predictable and wholly unrealistic in a lot of parts.

Did not like this book, didn't finish it.
Couldn't identify with the two main characters who I found unlikeable and didn't agree with the implication that most men are sexual predators. I also found it quite boring so abandoned it with 12 hours left. What a waste of a credit.

another great book from Karin Slaughter
I was initially disappointed it wasnt the usual Jan Cramer's narrative, but after coming to terms this was a stand alone book it made sense to have a different narrator.
Kathleen has done a great job with the storyline bringing the characters to life, adding tones and characterization.
As with all Karin Slaughter books, I've enjoyed this one. maybe a sequel with Hurley as proceccuter in another novel? or a mention in the Will Trent series?
we now have to wait for another book from Karin, and I can't wait to find out what this one is going to be.

Powerful
Not for the faint of heart, with deeply discomforting descriptions of abuse and drug use. Nonetheless, a powerful and dramatic story, great characterisation, and complex plotting. Narrator is good. Would recommend to listeners who like a thoughtful thriller that is a bit unusual but impeccably researched.

Really tried hard to find this gripping
I was encouraged by all the good reviews to get his book but I really regret it. Just too desperately long drawn out. I like a plot to build, but this is ridiculous. Furthermore, the language is not for the faint-hearted, nor are the descriptions. I kept going for a while, but I really found that I could not care less about what happened to any of the characters. For me, it is vital that at least one character in any book is someone you can like or at least empathise with. Not possible in this book. Really unpleasant people. Waste of a credit, a waste of my concentration trying to keep up with who was who, and a waste of the hours I have invested so far in listening to this. If you have a spare credit and nothing better to do for 18 hours, go for it!

best yet!
I absolutely loved this book! I've read most if Karin Slaughters book and as a stand alone this is up there with her best work. It made me laugh and cry (more cry, I have to admit), the references to current year were brilliant and the raw descriptions of loving and living as a heroin addict made me wonder if Karin herself had struggled with addiction! I highly recommend this audiobook.

Gratuitous swearing
This story should have been powerful and gripping. But the awful language, out of place and overwhelming, spoiled it. Brilliant narrator.
