About this listen

Bart Minnock, founder of the computer gaming giant U-Play, enters his private playroom, and eagerly can’t wait to lose himself in an imaginary world, to play the role of a sword-wielding warrior king, in his company’s latest top-secret project, Fantastical.

The next morning, he is found in the same locked room, in a pool of blood, his head separated from his body. It is the most puzzling case Eve Dallas has ever faced, and it is not a game.

Lt. Eve Dallas is having as much trouble figuring out how Bart Minnock was murdered as who did the murdering. The victim’s girlfriend seems sincerely grief-stricken, and his quirky-but-brilliant partners at U-Play appear shocked as well. No one seemed to have a problem with the enthusiastic, high-spirited millionaire of course, success can attract jealousy, and gaming, like any business, has its fierce rivalries and dirty tricks—as Eve’s husband, Roarke, one of U-Play’s competitors, knows well. But Minnock was not naïve, and he knew how to fight back in the real world as well as the virtual one.

Eve and her team are about to enter the next level of police work, in a world where fantasy is the ultimate seduction—and the price of defeat is death.

Enjoyable but sad with some real twists at the end

2023 AUDIBLE REVIEW
Enjoyable but sad with some real twists at the end.
BOOK REVIEW
Really sad how some selfish minds work.
Plausible deniability used to benefit oneself over people that consider you a friend.
Eve and Roarke butt heads a tiny bit in this one.
The whole gang are stumped as to how the murder was committed but Eve surprisingly thinks outside the box and actually goes into the realm of unbelievability, having to prove her theory to the E-geeks working the case.
Peabody really shines at the end of this one. Her good idea of monitoring Eve and Roarke probably saved Roarke’s life.
This was just a bit slow in the middle for me, too much gaming talk which I am not into.
I have owned most of these books in paperback for years but now have them all in eBook format, so I am rereading this series once more in order, updating and replacing missing reviews.
Even knowing what is in the future, it is absolutely no hardship to reread this series and I am really enjoying how all the characters are growing and changing. Especially Eve and Roarke.

Gamers

This story is all about gamers. A man has his head cut off at the time he was locked in his hollow room in his apartment. He was one of four owners of a company that Roark helped in their early days. The story wasn't far reaching as everything revolves around the company and the other partners. There was only really 3 to choose from and it still took me to chapter 19 to guess who did it.

Another Superb Listen

J D Robb does it again and again, she consistently delivers edge of the seat thrillers with great abundance, this particular thriller holds you guessing who did it and how right up until the end, she develops great backgrounds for all her characters that you can relate to and believe. All in All a superb listen and highly recommended.
