About this listen
It’s just an average night at the Ink Tank, the tattoo shop in Austin, Texas, where Brynn works as a tattoo artist. After a long shift, all she wants to do is head home, pop a few pills from the fresh bottle of Roxicodone in her jacket pocket, and slip into a nice buzz.
Her plans crumble when she’s abducted by her convict father, Alan, and forced into the road trip from hell: a cross-country trek to the Rocky Mountains and the shelter he built years ago to protect his family from the monsters living in his head, the monsters he says will erupt from the earth at any minute—the Feeders.
With each mile he unravels further, thrusting Brynn back into the childhood nightmare she thought she’d escaped forever. Alan is paranoid, and he’s definitely dangerous—but is he crazy? In this novel, we find that truth is not always what it seems, and that some secrets are better left buried.
Critic reviews
“I read Feeders in one bleary-eyed sitting, and I swear by the end the words were wriggling right off the page. I thought I was devouring it, but nope, this book devoured me. First, it burrows. Then it erupts, taking what's left of your brain right with it.” (Clay McLeod Chapman, author of Ghost Eaters)
“If you’re looking for a book that’s going to make you feel safe and warm, Feeders is not the book for you. Stephens doesn’t pull any punches as he takes you on a journey that’s visceral, raw, and absolutely brutal. This book is a cult classic in the making.” (Caitlin Marceau, award-winning author of This Is Where We Talk Things Out)
“A thunder beneath your feet, a power you haven’t felt before gathering in the broken earth…it’s Caleb Stephens emerging fully formed, ready to tear out your willing heart with both hands.” (Andrew F. Sullivan, author of The Marigold and The Handyman Method)

A creature story with real heart at the centre
Feeders was my first time reading a book by Caleb Stephens, and what a ride it ended up being. A creature feature with disaster elements, I've seen a lot of comparisons to the likes of Tremors, which are apt. The descriptions of the titular feeders and the havoc they wreak are excellent, and the book certainly works on that level.
However what really set it apart for me were the characters. So many of the people encountered in this book were brought to life with Stephens descriptions, given full back stories, understandable and genuine feeling motivations. Combined with a moving depiction of drug addiction and the struggle of someone trying to get their life back on track, Feeders has a lot of heart - while I may have gone in expecting a gory, monster-driven story, i instead found an oftentimes quite emotional read.
The narration was fantastic, bringing the characters to life, and really made me feel the emotional beats as much as I did the suspense and terror.
I'll definitely return to this book in future, and I have a suspicion that my rating may end up even higher the second time around.

Excellent story well narrated!
Feeders was a wild near-apocalyptic scramble across violent dangerous terrain to reach shelter from big bugs that got woken by human's greed for oil.
It was a well paced story with a constant feeling of threat so it's one of those books that is hard to put down - i think i got through the audiobook in just 2-3 listens!
The audiobook was well narrated and i would highly recommend it - it was a great story well written.

Humans get too greedy and awaken the Feeders!
Thank you to Caleb Stephens who provided a code so I could listen to this for free.
Feeders is a great post apocalyptic story which starts when humans get too greedy digging for oil.
Awakening the Feeders, black creatures coming up to devour humans.
The storyline is great. I love the dynamics between the characters and there are also some very touching/emotional aspects. The build up to dread starts right from the beginning and carries on delivering throughout the book. The constant cat and mouse game, not just with the feeders, but with other humans trying to survive.
Shelley narrated the book brilliantly. The right amount of different depth of voices for the characters without sounding absurd. She has a great pace for this book and would happily listen to more books she’s narrated.
