Summary

She was given two choices....

Georgiana Bridgerton isn't against the idea of marriage. She'd just thought she'd have some say in the matter. But with her reputation hanging by a thread after she's abducted for her dowry, Georgie is given two options: live out her life as a spinster or marry the rogue who has ruined her life.

Enter option number three....

As the fourth son of an earl, Nicholas Rokesby is prepared to chart his own course. He has a life in Edinburgh, where he's close to completing his medical studies, and he has no time - or interest - to find a wife. But when he discovers that Georgie Bridgerton - his literal girl-next-door - is facing ruin, he knows what he must do.

A marriage of convenience...

It might not have been the most romantic of proposals, but Nicholas never thought she'd say no. Georgie doesn't want to be anyone's sacrifice, and besides, they could never think of each other as anything more than childhood friends...could they?

But as they embark upon their unorthodox courtship they discover a new twist to the age-old rhyme. First comes scandal, then comes marriage. But after that comes love....

Great series except for the lazy tropes

Don't get me wrong, I do really love this series and the following Bridgerton series, however, on this re-listen to this series, I'd forgotten just how many lazy dastardly-corset-tropes there are.

Reference to Billy's dress fire accident at court was to do with the old fashioned wide court dresses, and nothing to do with wearing a corset! Plus all the references to the "difficulties" of wearing corsets when going from country living to fashionable living is also nonsense as EVERYONE wore corsets because there were no bras and that's essentially the purpose of a corset! Then Nicholas who would know nothing at all about wearing a corset, other than what he THINKS it's like, but feeling like he can give such a censorious opinion, is just ridiculous and frankly it's because of men like him that we are stuck with this lazy trope in the first place!

There's enough corset-hating out there from people who have either never worn one, or never need to without female writers kowtowing to the ridiculous trope! Take it from one who HAS worn a corset, that they're much more comfortable than most of my modern bras!

okay

Started off nice and funny but went down hill from the unnecessary meowing sounds of the cat to the flat end of the story. Not my favourite Julia Quinn story I'm afraid.....

Did not enjoy the cat meowing!

The cat meowing just put me off listening to this story. I didn't understand why we had to listen to the noise. Oh! as well as the character that vomited. This was described in great detail - was that necessary?!

An enjoyable listening experience.

This is the final book in the Rokesby series. I enjoyed the inclusion of characters from the first three books plus those from the later Bridgerton books. I did feel, however, that this one moved rather slowly, as if padding was needed to reach the required length, which I haven’t felt in any other of the Rokesby books or the Bridgerton series.

Written on a Friday afternoon perhaps?

I’m not sure anything actually happened in this book and the narration of the cat was awful.
From an interesting start it went pretty flat and tediously predictable pretty quick.
Not one of her best that’s for sure.

I watched the Bridgerton series on tv and loved it!
I am very disappointed with this book, the narrator didn’t help!

Scandal and Romance

'First Comes Scandal' is the final book of The Rokesby series by Julia Quinn.

Georgie Bridgerton has been unfairly enveloped in scandal. Nicholas Rokesby - neighbour and family friend - offers to marry Georgie, but this offer is definitely unappealing to both, and so begins a back-to-front courtship.

Quinn has created two brilliant characters, who are likeable, entertaining, and believable. The banter back-and-forth, the tension, and frisson makes for a joyful and fun listen. This is a feel-good novel, that's witty and funny, and has a gratifying conclusion. Rosalyn Landor's narration was perfect as always.

Not to standard

I perceived as all the other books I enjoyed, This however no substance and the journey to Scotland was literally painful. Can honestly say I was glad for it to finish

A lovely....

storyline with some great antics in as well as some lovely characters. The narrator was very good at using different voices for the characters.
