Story
Gene Hawkins, investigator by trade, was expert at arranging events so that they appeared accidental to all involved. Therefore, when he himself witnessed an ‘accident’ his curiosity flared up bright, and he insisted on looking into what he regarded as a work of art. A quarter of a million pounds worth of Derby-winning stallion had vanished into the Blue Grass of Kentucky... and a young man and a girl spent a dangerous afternoon in a punt on the River Thames.

Story
Peter Darwin was hoping for some quiet leave from the Foreign Office. Instead he found himself in the village of his childhood, at the service of a veterinary surgeon whose operating theater was rapidly acquiring an unwanted reputation as an abattoir. The sudden unexplained death of a string of valuable racehorses from one small area in Gloucestershire was a mystery the police couldn't solve. But Darwin was local. He remembered people and what was at stake. And now he knew enough to get himself killed.

A British jockey, riding in Norway, has disappeared, and with him has gone a day's takings from the turnstiles of Oslo racecourse. Story
When a sick friend asks Edward Lincoln to investigate the comprehensive failure of a string of racehorses, he agrees to help out. But it is impossible for him to go about the task quietly and unnoticed because he is now a world-class star of action films, in which he always plays the hero. And the apparently easy survey of the string of racehorses blows him through a smokescreen into circumstances, where, to survive, he has to make himself become the man everyone else already thinks he is.

The house was stripped bare of all its treasures. Gone was the furniture, the family silver, the paintings and the antique china. And if that was a shock for Charles Todd, painter of horses, how much more harrowing was the trauma for his cousin Donald, whose house it was and whose young wife lay on the sitting room floor, bloody and dead... A coincidental meeting with a middle-aged widow sends Charles off to Australia, on the trail of a gang with a fruitful business in forging works of art.

Summary
Henry Grey doesn't particularly care for having been born the heir to an earldom. He is a reserved young man whose greatest problem is his mother's match-making plots and whose greatest joy is to ride as an amateur steeplechase jockey. But on a sudden impulse, he throws in his respectable desk job to join a firm which transports racehorses all over the world. Yardman Transport proves to be Henry's passport to many things, not the least the girl he loves, and a tidy little racket which brings him face to face with death.

For Francis fans only
I've been listening to a number of Dick Francis books on audible over the last few months. This is the fifth I've tried and it was the one I enjoyed the least by far. It seemed to take an awfully long time to get going with the first half all setting the scene while not really advancing the story at all. When it did finally get into thriller mode the plot was ok, if a little predictable about who the 'baddies' were, but by then I was fairly bored and had no empathy for the hero. I did make it to the end so it wasn't a dead loss, but I would recommend other Dick Francis books ahead of this one, especially For Kicks, Odds Against, or his first novel Dead Cert.
Tony Britton reads it well.

More flying than riding
This story is based almost completely in the air transportation of horses, so don't expect much action on the turf. It's got a decent storyline of shady dealings in horseflesh trading, with interesting characters and lurking menace. And for once the narrator makes a pretty good fist of the principal female voice (the hero's Italian love interest). What rather spoilt it for me was the complicated, puzzling motives behind the final violent confrontation, which involves some sort of Cold War defection, which I still can't figure out in how it relates to the general plot!
Good sound quality throughout. Altogether, this is one for holding in reserve until you've worked your way through the best of Francis' novels, unless you're particularly gripped by novels set in the skies..

An excellent story and a world class narrator
Not Mr. Francis' best work, (there are a lot of loose ends at the end) but a rollicking good read none-the-less. Once it got going I couldn't leave it and Mr Britton's expressive voice made the whole experience memorable.

Not a typical Dick Francis
I have been a Dick Francis fan for years. This book was not typical of his work. It started out very slowly and I almost quit listening. But it picked up and ended with a breathtaking finish.
It had little to do with horseracing; there was romance and adventure. I thought the ending was abrupt. It left me with questions unanswered.

Not one of Francis' best
I normally love Dick Francis, but the plot of this book stretches credulity beyond the breaking point! The reader is wonderful with a lovely British accent and a wide range of voices ( including a woman's voice like a bad Monty Python skit), but the good reading can't make up for bad writing. The plot is both boring and unbelievable at the same time. Villains are too bad to be believed. The main character is too steady, strong and lucky. I would not recommend this.

Flying finish
Tony Britton does a superb job narrating this story. I have transported horses by air and what Francis describes is quite real. This was a bit of a different story for Francis but still had racing and involvement with the horse industry. Horse transport is a big part of the business so was nice to hear a bit about it. The ending was abrupt and left the reader to fill it in.

Francis does it again!
Would you consider the audio edition of Flying Finish to be better than the print version?
Since I did not read the print verison, I can't answer. But the audio sure was a nail biter!
What about Tony Britton’s performance did you like?
Mr Britton was a perfect fit!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Would have been great to hear it all at once. But the book did not suffer!

Very intriguing book!
The book has a very good storyline. It really caught me off-guard when I finally caught on to all the twists and turns. I have read or listened to 5-6 of Francis' books and I thought this was one of the best.
