Summary
The film Rabbit-Proof Fence is based on this true account of Doris Pilkington's mother Molly, who as a young girl led her two sisters on an extraordinary 1,600 kilometer walk home. Under Western Australia's invidious removal policy of the 1930s, the girls were taken from their Aboriginal families at Jigalong on the edge of the Little Sandy Desert, and transported halfway across the state to the Native Settlement at Moore River, north of Perth. Here Aboriginal children were instructed in the ways of white society and forbidden to speak their native tongue.
The three girls—aged 8, 11 and 14—managed to escape from the settlement's repressive conditions and brutal treatment. Barefoot, without provisions or maps, they set out to find the rabbit-proof fence, knowing it passed near their home in the north. Tracked by Native Police and search planes, they hid in terror, surviving on bush tucker, desperate to return to the world they knew.

Read the book instead.
A book that should probably be read rather than listened to. The story is told through letters and historical artifacts which may be more suitable for reading. Most of the book is about history of the lost generation and about 50 minutes about the walk itself.

Harrowing and Incredible
This devastating story taught me so much as one realises that such events took place as late as 1940. It’s an exciting listen/ read and illustrates an amazing feat taken by three girls. It’s described well and this desperately important part of Australian history that should never be forgotten. The stollen generation.

Authentic audiobook voice!
The book is read by Rachael Maza, who herself is of mixed origin (Aboriginal, Torres Strait and Dutch heritage). Her voice and Australian English is very fitting, together with the correct pronunciation and accent regarding indiginous names, words and way of speaking. Gives the story a genuine experience. I also liked the musical transitions between chapters.
Storywise I found the end a bit abrupt and I would’ve liked some more information about Molly, Daisy and Gracie after it all, and also Doris, since she’s Molly’s daughter.

Great quick read.
I loved this very simple story. Full of nostalgia, I'm so glad that their story has been told, for it is a beautiful example of how the simplicity of life can become buried under a 'rubble' of civilisation and a lesson in acceptance of diversity.
