THE SPORTS BOOK AWARDS INTERNATIONAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE YEAR

Kieren Fallon was one of the world’s greatest jockeys, but his career was littered with controversial incidents. Now, in his powerful and honest autobiography, he tells all.

'The most eagerly anticipated racing autobiography for many years' Greg Wood, Guardian

As a jockey, Kieren Fallon had a unique rapport with his horses, often coaxing them to victory when others had struggled. His skill and commitment made him a punter’s favourite. His magnificent record, which saw him crowned Champion Jockey on six occasions, ensured he became one of racing’s biggest stars.

But that was only ever part of the story. Having come over to the UK from Ireland to make his name, Fallon’s combative nature brought him to the attention of the racing authorities. When he dragged a rival jockey off his mount in 1994, he began a series of run-ins that would eventually see him on trial in the Old Bailey, accused of race fixing. Although the judge eventually ruled that there was no case to answer, the damage to his career and reputation had been done.

In Form, Kieren Fallon provides a searingly honest account of his life, and the pressures he faced to get to the top of his sport, where winning was never enough, and where relaxation came in the shape of a bottle of vodka or a meal that had to be ‘flipped’ immediately to ensure he maintained his weight. He worked with some of the best trainers and won all the biggest races, but true happiness only ever really came to him when he was on the back of a horse – a joy that he still feels now that he has retired from racing as he rides work early in the morning.

Brutally honest as well as entertaining, this is a unique sporting memoir.©2017 Kieren Fallon (P)2017 Simon & Schuster Audio UK

Critic reviews

'I’ve always been fascinated by Kieren Fallon; so talented and yet so damaged. So I was drawn like a moth to a flame to his recent autobiography Form. It doesn’t disappoint... It has not been a life without conflict, but if you look into his haunted, hooded eyes, that does not come as a surprise. What is unexpected, however, is the insight that one gets through the Fallon prism.' (Charlie Brooks)
'The most eagerly anticipated racing autobiography for many years' (Greg Wood)
'His story gives us a graphic picture of the downside of racing at the highest level — the pressures, the ‘flipping’ to keep to an unrealistic weight, the travelling grind...For me the best pages are those in which he describes his riding methods, how he used his legs and his body while others used the whip. His story of Kris Kin’s Derby victory is riveting.' (Robin Oakley)
'Brutally candid' (Tom Richmond)

An interesting insight into a gifted horseman who was put on trial by the media

I work in the racing industry so it was good to hear Mr Fallon put his side across. He has done a masterful job.
To reach the top of your profession takes some doing. Especially when the press are making up lurid stories to sell a few newspapers.
The list of big races he has won and great horses he has ridden is a long one.
I wish more autobiographies from the racing world were available.
Bottom line if you like racing you will like this.

The Highs with some sad Lows

Having spent my working life on the edge of racing I thoroughly enjoyed this book, aided by an excellent narrator Frank Grimes

excellent

it is more than just a racing story. it takes you from rural Ireland right around the world to all the major racing centres and from the training gallops to the court room.

Exceptional - flies by, and makes u feel for him

V good account of his racing career, and how flimsy ‘evidence’ can dramatically affect a high profile persons career.

I really enjoyed it - and feel he has been v hard done by.

The British racing authorities were/are vindictive and amateurs.

I wish him well.

Champion Jockey Champion book

Brilliant absolutely brilliant, I’m not massively into horse racing, I don’t really bet on it these days but I’d recommend this book to anyone interested in sport or just the life of a great sportsman. Thanks KF and good luck in whatever you do nowadays.

No Holding Back

If you like racing, you will love this. Simply but well written without the annoying literary pretension of some sports books. Grimes (once of Strumpet City!) gives a perfect reading. It is A third Angela’s Ashes, a third sporting masterclass and finally a riveting courtroom drama. I’ll admit that after Lester Pigott he’s my favourite jockey, but even if you were not a big fan, I dare you not to be moved one moment, smiling the next and enthralled by idiocy of the BHA in their various attempts in court to destroy a genius, simply because he was different and a non-conformist. God bless you Kieren and may you have the peaceful retirement you greatly deserve.
